Q:

WHERE IS MARTHA'S LAKE?

A:

Flying from Vancouver to Seattle yesterday and enjoying the view. Noticed a ferry in the water just west of Snohomish. Anyone who lives in the Seattle area know what the patch of trees represents just east of the same airport? Very detailed - must be somebody's favorite park or something. Since this is home turf I guess a little more effort went into it.

That's Martha's Lake. If you fly over it, you will find an airstrip down there amongst the trees. Lots of fun for you "reset button" fans. Getting in or out is a real bugaboo. It is in use, though, and I haven't heard of any exceptional accident occurrences.

Martha Lake (Alderwood Manor) is 1760 feet long and 24 feet wide (if I remember correctly. What makes getting in there and out hairy is the tall trees at either end - definitely true 50 ft obstacles. Last time I went there was the summer in a 172 with two people and full fuel. Final requires going through the trees, not over. It's the kind of place where you need to think about a V1 speed for your Cessna. If I remember, there were some light twins there. Practice your short field techniques elsewhere before trying an approach. It's the tightest public field I know of in the Northwest.
