Q:

HOW DO YOU INSTALL THIRD PARTY SCENERY?

A:

Scenery for FS98 generally comes packed with scenery files (bgl) and texture file (r8 etc..). This is a version of how I install my scenery files for flightsim. You should set up a file system similar to this before unzipping the scenery files.

1. I created a folder for scenery add-ons under program files such as; c:\program files\fsscenery

2. Say that I want to download scenery for Dulles. This is what I would add;

c:\program files\fsscenery\Dulles then the next folder:
c:\program files\fsscenery\Dulles
                                           \scenery
                                           \texture

3. Your windows explorer should look like this when you have the folders where you need them;

C:\
    Program files\
             fsscenery\
                     Dulles\
                           scenery
                           texture

4. Unzip the scenery file to a temp folder. I made one called "scenery unzipped".

5. Move or copy all bgl's to the scenery folder and all of the r8's, oav's and pats to the texture folder. TIME TO FIRE UP FS98 !

6. Once flight sim is up and running (just hit "fly now"), go the the world tab and click on "scenery library".

7. A dialog box will come up asking you a question. Pay no attention to the question. Just hit "OK".

8. The next dialog box, click on "Files".

9. The next dialog box, click on "Add".

10. There will be a dialog box that asks for the file path to the new scenery file that you want to create. For the scenery that we are using as an example, this is what you would type into that space;

c:\program files\fsscenery\dulles\scenery\*.bgl

    The asterisk in front of .bgl is very important. It tells FS98 to
    look for "all" bgl files associated with this particular scenery.

11. If the file path was typed correctly, the box underneath of it (scenery name) will be highlighted. Give your new scenery a name (Dulles Scenery).

12. Put a check in the box marked "scenery area active" and make the scenery area type "local". Flightsim will automatically set the "layer" as 0001.

13. Click on OK, OK, OK (three seperate dialog boxes, all click OK). By this time you should be back to your simulator and it should be updating your scenery files. Go the the airport and check out the new sites that you addes.
