13.2 How do I do a CPU upgrade?

Q:
HOW DO I DO A CPU UPGRADE?
A:
Before purchasing the new CPU, first go the the Intel site (www.intel.com) and download their little program to test your machine to see if it will run the new chip. Just follow the instructions - it's easy and quick.
If you get a positive answer, then you can go for the 200 MMX Overdrive. It's quick to install, 5 minutes max. That includes one minute to get the cover off the machine, and 3 minutes to get it back on. No jumpers to change. Just take out the old chip and plug in the new one.
On my machine I got a 30% improvement in processing speed and a 70% improvement in video speed as tested with ZDSpeedRate. In FS98 I saw a 40 to 50% improvement in frame rates.
The 200MMX does run hotter than the P133. I was plagued with fatal system errors the first day I installed it, and finally took the cover off the machine. Problem disappeared. I'm now experimenting with an extra, add-on, fan inside the box. If I purchase it will cost me between $25 and $35 (US). Hard to tell if you'll have the same problem until you try, but I've discovered that a lot of folks do have it. Intel told me on their Overdrive forum that there is a significant difference in the running temperatures of the two chips.
