5.18 How can I tell how far I am from the VOR?
From FlightSim
To the actual point, the way you know how far you are from the VOR you are flying towards is by way of the DME. The DME will display the distance to the VOR if the VOR is equipped with DME capabilities, like most are. Another way is if you are using some downloadable adventure which allows you to plot your destination in coordinates, then it will show you how far from that destination you are when you are flying towards it. You can program several waypoints also and fly from one to the next... These are some ideas that I have to answer one of your questions.

Most VOR users DO in fact fly from one to the other, changing
frequencies and OBS settings as needed. Besides the DME, you can
also get a rough idea of WHERE you are between VORs by using the
second NAV radio and tuning in another VOR, finding out what radial
you are on (reading with the FROM flag and needle centered). Of
course you need a chart for this. As others have mentioned on this
forum from time to time, you can often stop by the local flight
school or FBO at a nearby airport and get the charts you need. Some
charts go out of date as often as every six months, and they will
often be happy to give you an old one.
