5.36 How do you read and use the VOR gauges in FS98?
From FlightSim
I don't know which airplane (or gauge) you are using. The Cessnas have a swinging needle hinged at the top. The Lear and the B737 have a "broken" arrow in the HSI.
If you are using the autopilot, wait until you are about 5 nm or so from the first VOR. Turn off NAV hold and retune to the second VOR, adjust the OBS for the Cessnas or the course dial for the jets, to align the needle vertically, or connect the arrow portions and then reconnect the NAV hold. The airplane will turn to the new course immediately.
A note here. If you are tuning to the new VOR when you say you are, you probably are not in range and are not receiving them. In which case the needle or arrow will not respond to any adjustments. If this happens when you are close to the first VOR, turn to the approximate radial and continue manually until the second VOR begins to register.
If you are flying manually, the process is almost the same except that you turn the Cessna to the course indicated by the OBI and on the jets you turn to bring the non-segmented arrow pointing straight up.
Hope this isn't too confusing. There is a fine tutorial in the "How To" section of this site. It includes a step-by-step procedure for a sample flight including a ILS landing at SeaTac airport in Seattle. It was written with FS95 in mind, but the procedures are the same.
