5.40 How do you use the auto throttle?
From FlightSim
ARE THE AUTO THROTTLES NONFUNCTIONAL ON THE MICROSOFT SUPPLIED SUPPLEMENTAL PANELS (E.G HEAVY.JET.2) OR AM I DOING SOMETHING WRONG?
You're doing something wrong. For the autothrottle to work on the B737 type
panel, it has to be "armed" by the switch to the left of the autopilot main
switch. Then the autopilot main must be on and the SPD or MACH hold switches
turned on. The throttle will then maintain, or try to maintain, the value
entered in the IAS/MACH window.
The best thing to do is to set it all up while aligned for takeoff. Then press the TO/GA button below the throttle quadrant and the throttle will advance for takeoff automatically and retract to maintain the preset speed (250 kts?) while clearing the airport space. Then the IAS/MACH value can be increased, while being careful not to exceed 98% on the N1 gauge, in increments to cruising speed. I rarely touch my throttle at all during takeoff, cruise and landing. Fun, fun, fun.
