5.43 What is the switch on the VOR and ADR radios used for in FS98?
From FlightSim
It's called the "Ident" switch. It is on the Cessna radio stack also, but it is a little black button there. It's function is to cause the reception of a Morse code identifier of the beacon when it is in range. This assures you that you have the correct beacon. Some beacons in some areas share the same frequency. They may be two to three hundred miles apart but at high altitude you don't always know which is being received. It makes for fun refreshment of your code reading skills and wakes you up on long flights.

If you are talking about the switch I think you are, its sole purpose is to let
you hear the Morse code identifier for the Navaid you are tuned to. It's
important in real flying to listen to the ID for any navaid you are depending
on in order to be sure you have the correct station (code is listed on aviation
charts) and to be sure it is working. Sometimes the maintenance folks may be
working on the transmitter, and they are supposed to turn off the ID when they
are doing so.
