WHAT IS A GOOD BOOK ON UNDERSTANDING THE MECHANICS OF FLYING?

A:

Aviation is an extremely unfamiliar environment for most folks. A lot of things are unintuitive, based on peoples experience on the ground, and based on them not really understanding what is going on. Your reaction is quite typical, Dan. That's why instructors often insist on certain things that seem uncomfortable. For those who really want to understand the mechanics of flying from a pilot's perspective, the book Stick and Rudder by Wolfgange Langeweishe (10 to 1 I misspelled that) is the definitive reference. I always very strongly recommend it to my students, also. Although written in 1944, and although the ground portions tend to focus on tailwheels (since they were the most common then), I've never heard of a book that surpasses the insight shown by this engineer.
