Q:

I AM NOT HAVING MUCH LUCK GETTING MULTIPLAYER TO WORK. MY MAIN PROBLEM IS THAT WHEN I TRY TO CONNECT TO THE NET FROM FS98, IT GOES TO THE MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER SCREEN - ONE PROBLEM; I AM NOT USING MSN, I AM USING AOL. HOW DO I GET FS98 TO RECOGNIZE THAT I AM USING AOL AND NOT MSN? HOW DO I CHANGE THE SETTINGS TO RECOGNIZE THAT AOL IS MY DEFAULT NET BROWSER?

A:

Multiplayer does not use a browser. Do you have someone specific that you are trying to connect to? You have to have an IP address to connect to over the internet, or else you have to host a session, again, use the TCP/IP connection over the internet. You select the multiplayer connection from the menu, go through several dialog boxes, and wind up with a choice of connection types. For the internet this MUST be TCP/IP. If you are trying to use the MS provided game server, I'm told there is special software for it (I've never used it, so cannot help on that).

I'm just curious if you have to start AOL fist, then fs98? I found IP addresses, like 207.172.201.101, but when I type it into the box, it just does nothing - freezes. This is when I start AOL first. Either it freezes , or I get the MSN starting screen. Do you have any suggestions, or no of a post with detailed instructions?

I normally have my internet connection up, then run FS98, then, when FS has settled down, I choose the multiplayer connect option -- you might check the "settings" choice first. I often host a session, but if I am connecting to someone else's session, the dialog boxes lead me by the hand, I put in the IP address where it is asked for, wait a bit, and I am connected. You MUST have the IP address for the person to whom you are going to connect -- do not put YOURS in.

You can play multiplayer without using any browser by using your or another players IP address to hook together over the net. You can hook up to 8 players this way. You have a number of options in the multiplayer setup screen. If you choose search for players on the internet you go to the Zone which is an MS site that you can play multiplayer on. You should select join an existing session and also select TCP/IP if you are already connected to the net through an ISP. Once you make these two selections you will be prompted for an IP address of the host of the multiplayer session. You can enter the IP address and in a few seconds you will see a list of sessions you can join (normally one if you are connecting with another individual hosting a session). You may also host a session in the same way. In order to find others to fly with you can go to a number of web pages that have info on multiplayer sessions including the IP address you require. You can also fly with your friends this way in multiplayer, all you need is the IP address of his/her computer and it needs to be hooked to the net.
