Flight following
From FlightSim
Flight following is a service provided (in the U.S. and some other countries) by ATC, which allows the pilot to talk to ATC and get radar coverage, even though he is VFR. Typically the initial contact is either with approach/departure control or with center.
This service is provided workload permitting, and you must be in an area with radar coverage. It's also good if you are familiar with IFR communications, since if your communication isn't concise and clear the controller may refuse you service or discontinue service.
