HEAT: High Explosive Anti-Tank, a shaped charge munition designed to penetrate armor with a high speed jet of molten metal. Usually used in the context of tank-borne munitions but may be also refer to airborne cannon.
HEAVY: An aircraft capable of takeoff weight of 300,000 pounds or more
HESH: High Explosive Squash Head, a kind of low speed armor-defeating munition that causes spalling off the inner surface of an armor layer.
HF: High Frequency, the radio frequency band between 3 and 30 MHz
HIWAS: Hazardous Inflight Weather Advisory Service, continuous recorded hazardous weather information broadcast over certain VOR stations
HOLD: A procedure in which a plane flies a racetrack shaped pattern relative to a fix while awaiting clearance to proceedHOOK: Jargon for "tail hook".
HOT START: An unwanted turbine engine start condition in which raw fuel pools in the engine and burns as open flames. May necessitate an engine hot section teardown.
HOT SECTION: The combustion chamber(s) of a turbine engine along with its supporting components.
HOWGOZIT: A flight engineer's fuel status and fuel rate of consumption report.
HSI: Horizontal Situation Indicator, an instrument combining VOR, ADF, heading control and compass functions.
HYDROPLANING: A wheel skid condition caused by an unbroken film of water between a tire and the pavement on which the tire is rolling, resulting in brakes "lock up". Overcome by grooving the pavement.
