Unfortunately, i don't get the chance to do much railfanning. And since i am an Amtrak nut, the times i usually do get out railfanning i head toward the Alton or the downtown Amtrak station.
If your mom grew up in Riverview, she may know where Certified Motors is (it's been a staple of the communityfor decades now). We're two houses away from them.
And if you ever remember going into Henze's on a day when there was a girl working there, well that would have been my wife! And i was there on most Saturdays in 2000 until the new management took over in August of that year.

I am from New London Wi. I was raised in Fone du Lac. My father ran a plating factory across from the North Fond du Lac yards when I was growing up.

When I was younger I use to just hate sitting and waiting for the trains to go through Fond du Lac. Seemed like I would get caught daily. Now I just love to sit and watch the cars go by.

For the last 30 years I've lived in Goldsboro, NC. Came here with the USAF in 1971, decided to stay when I "retired" in 1976.

My love for trains goes way back farther than this, but I'll stick to the question! :)

Goldsboro is at the crossing of the CSX (> SCL > SAL?) and the Norfolk Southern (>Southern + Atlantic & East Carolina). Just freight operations now. But there have been rumors about a passenger service here "downeast", and the local historical society has been muttering about restoring the old Union Terminal. It's currently used as a storage warehouse for a building supply company! :(

The place played a role in the Civil War (The War of Northern Aggression, we call it! ;-)), as it was a fairly important rail target for Grant's troops! The battle of Bentonville took place not too far away.

I have an old Southern Railway passenger timetable from 1949, and they still had two trains in and two out most days! Don't know about the SAL.

I'll have to take a picture of the railroad crossing! NS has a big red rectangular STOP sign, and CSX just uses a highway-type STOP sign. Primitive - no interlocking towers! :)

I have CSX 161.59/161.100 MHz and NS 160.95 MHz programmed into my scanners. They get pretty chatty sometimes, but quiet like a graveyard most of the time! :)

We have a local HO Model Railroad Club, but I haven't made a meeting in a long time. :-(

I have a picture of Tahquamenon Falls on my desk. Beautiful scenery!! I like to X-country ski in the UP. This photo was from a mid September trip I took with my daughter about 6-7 years ago, the tannic acid makes the water look like iced tea. I am jealous of all the tall trees. We get some cottonwoods along the river here, but not much larger than sumac elsewhere. I grew up with mesquite trees (short scrub trees with very long thorns and very little shade), I guess you can say I am arborly deprived.
