OK Here you go..... Screenshot from this morning with more or less the final texture set on the loco....

Now working on the tender..... So we're not too far away from Beta....
Any notes or comments welcome, especially anything telling me where it's still not right, because this is the last chance to get corrections to the model and textures in before I close the door on changes.....

LAST EDITED ON May-30-02 AT 10:17AM (EDT)[p]Thanks Fozzy. Looks like the real thing. I was reading that you are going to close the designing area for the K-36. But you need to send it to the beta testers before you do that. They might catch something you may have forgot. Just wanted to tell you.

Fozzy, you are turning me into a "narrow" minded person. From what I see your engine looks spectacular. I can't see anything to bring to your attention. I recently visited Antonito, and shot a few pictures of narrow gauge rolling stock. There are also numerous static narrow gauge displays all over Colorado that I took so pics of too. If you would like some reskinning help or would like the photo's let me know. Here is a "tender" moment.

It's a mixture of Photo work and hand drawing, quite a lot of hand drawing to be honest... I spent so much time getting those textures right that even I can't spot the difference between them in places. I'll let you into a secret... the colour and surface texture for the smokebox is a scan of the semi matt finish foil inner lid of a tube of Pringles. LOL :D (with a lot of shading work and colour adjustment plus rivits and other bits.
The smokebox front is entirely hand drawn, with reference to photographs, The boiler textures are all hand drawn, the cab side sheets are part photograph part hand drawn, the cylinder wraper is photograph but required a lot of re-working to get it to look right, the vave gear is again mostly hand drawn with some parts taken from re-worked photographs. The doors windows and a lot of other parts are hand drawn, the backhead (Which nobody has seen yet) is also hand drawn as are most of the controls and seats and inner walls of the cab. The chassis is hand drawn as are most of the textures on the pony and trailing bogie. WHeeeezzzz!! Long list that! LOL :D
All that and it's still only just over 6K polys!! with no sign of any dents on frame rate.
Glad you like em though!
Best Regards,
Julian (Fozzy The Bear)
p.s. I am working on getting your loco done! It's getting there slowly!!
P.P.S... The chain in the front coupling is a scan of a real piece of chain, thet holds my garden gate shut since the recent burglary! :(

Fozzy, That is some jaw dropping work you got there! simply stunning. I am amazed at you good use of resources <the pringles>!! that is very clever. I have just one question. Will the , ithink its the generator, (the thing between the cab and the first "dome" on the loco on the outside) have smoke comming out of it or no?
Great loco, cant wait for her!

Yeah it's a turbo generator... powers the headlight. Unfortunately I havn't yet found a way to make it work so that steam comes out of it.... If anyone has any ideas on that one please do yell up... I don't think that MSTS has the effects hooks to let me do it.

Fozzy,
Outstanding work. The realism of those textures is eerie, and puts many to shame. We are fortunate to have dedicated, enthusiastic people like you to make 'as real as it gets' a whole lot more real. You're nearly dragging my attention away from electric traction and back to steam.
Now, if only I could apply the Pringles method to my interurbans! Mabye I can't, but I can still eat the pringles!!

Hey! course you can.... You'd be surprised how many household objects when scanned and bits extracted to form base textures give a really good result. Give it a go...... You can grab stuff distort it ripple it twist it blur it re-colour it....etc etc.... overlay one texture on another with a transparency level...
The trick to making textures look real is dirt and grime.. even at low levels it improves the result masivley... The other trick is to think about each component separately.. think about which direction the light is coming from and fake the shadows with an air brush... get each component right on it's own... then colour balance each one to match in with the others around it.
Hope that helps with the interurban textures!

Julian (Fozzy The Bear)

LOL ROFL.. :D That'd be a very good question if it was a K-36... But it's actually a C-16 Number 278.....
The trestle is part of a former bridge through the canyon. It's just a memorial... But I personally think it's a great shame and a sin to leave a beautiful locomotive like that out to the ravages of the weather with no care and attention! RESTORATION NOW!!!!!! They could do a fake mock up one if they wanted to leave a loco out like that! I mean is it a piece of sculpture or a locomotive that should be run or preserved properly?

It's a set of additional track and scenic components that let you build routes with new track sections including narrow gauge track. It has a few problems but Okrasa Giha (Hope I spelled that right) who wrote it, is sorting them out, and the new version is supposed to be better than the last one.

That particular loco was used in several movies, and for one of them it was repainted in the Grande gold with 4-stripes livery that the Rio Grande used on their PA,F-7 and F-9 units. Believe it or not the Rio Grande actually operated it in regular service that way for almost a year.

>If anyone has any ideas

I use an invisible tender between the two units of the Cab Forward. It seems tenders are allowed to have a smoke effects section. Propably meant for tenders with boosters. But also zero-power invisible locomotive can be used. But I don't see a way to add such tender to a one-unit loco without the effect moving out of place in curves. And it's not a very elegant solution.
Btw, has anyone noticed whether the drain pipe effect works? What does a drain pipe exactly do on steam locomotives?
FozzyBear

>Btw, has anyone noticed whether the
>drain pipe effect works? What
>does a drain pipe exactly

I think this effect is a confusion in technical terms by Kuju.....Drain pipes in the real world are the ones that they are calling the cylinder steam effect.....
However I suspect that the drain pipes effect was supposed to simulate the Injector overflow pipes.... And the answer here, is that, no I can't get it to work either.... Could be a spelling error in the Kuju routines again, or could just be another feature they didn't get round to including.

OK, Scoobysnax, here's my post:
What is there to add to what's already been said? It's extremely nice work, Fozzy. I'll have to work extra hard to get the route worthy of her.
As far as suggested changes - I'm no expert on the loco (or much of the rest of it, for that matter!), so I can't add much. I'll have to see how she runs before I can add my $0.02 worth on that topic.
As I've posted on the Route Forum, the C&TSRR has all 63 mi of track down, and about 25 mi of scenery (Chama to Osier) "completed." That means there are trees, buildings, and bridges there, but I'm planning on making some changes before I call it "final." Not to worry - I'll get it posted before I perfect it.
Again, spectactular work, Fozzy. I hope this has been as satisfying for you to work on as it looks (especially given the compensation!).

Yeah it's been very satisfying so far... frustrating at times, but still satisfying... the greatest satisfaction should come from the fact that people seem to want to use it. I'll be very happy once I get it finally uploaded and I can start on a few other projects that are awaiting attention.
I'm away at the mo using my other half's laptop... so i won't see any replies till tuesday. But if anyone has anything they want yell it up and I'll get back to you asap....
