View Full Version : Shinkansen? Any Japanese Designers?

Hello I just want to enquire if there are any designers who are in the process of building any of the Shinkansen trains from Japan. There are four major h/speed units all quite different and the 'Nozomi' is a great looking machine. I will try to attach picture if I can as I have never done so before, thanks.
Roni, the "small world" guy, was working on a 500 but that was back in March and I don't know how he's progressing.
We do need more Japanese stock. Any idea where to get some?

Funny you should mention that. Since I saw this '0' Series Shinkansen at the National Railway Museum in York (UK) last weekend, I was thinking how nice it would be to run a full trainset of these on MSTS. In my opinion the original style Shinkansens are a classic design, and have never been improved on by any of the later variants.

I have been trying the search engines for designers in Japan because I thought this would have been well under way by now with the release of MSTS but no luck to date. It isn't the language thingee but there just doesn't seem to be any Japanese designers around (!!!) I have a friend in Hiroshima who has sent me all the latest photo's of the Nozomi and Hikari and will keep trying. Regards John

The 0 Series is a classic. The only Shinkansen I ever rode was a 100 Series way back in 1992. I rode the train from Tokyo to Hiroshima where my grandmother lives. (It was also the first time I had seen her since I was 2 years old - 1959.) For some pics and specs, check out this site: http://www.h2.dion.ne.jp/~dajf/byunbyun/index.htm

I was just looking at the site , and the 400 series really struck me as WOW! If anything make that. Modern yet very unique.

I like the version with the very sharp nose, there is a model of it next to the Shinkansen at York.
If that hit someone on the tracks it would impale him!

Looks as if NASA had entered the railway business, eh? ;-)
Seriously, I, too, would like a Shinkansen line (with trainsets) a lot...preferably of the same quality as Clem Tillier's TGVs and lucweb's upcoming LGV Med line. (Aren't I modest? :-) )

I'm devoted to American EMD and early ALCO diesel stuff, but I have to say, there's no better high speed trains then the Shinkansen 0 and 200 series. Nothing will beat those models. The 100s look too much like a wedge and the E-2 Max is horrendously ugly.
I vote for a Shinkansen 0 / 200 series trainset!

It would be great to see these wonders of a train zipping by, plus I want my TGVs and Acela to have some company.

I'd love a Shinkansen. I particularly like the 100 and 400 series, and the E-1 'Max' units. It'd be a great compliment to the collection of routes we have here, something a bit different from all the US and European routes. I am tempted to download GMax and have a go at one, probably the E-1 Max first off. Or maybe have a go at a fictional route.

Yeah, a Shinkansen for Microsoft Train Simulator would be wonderful. I just got back from Japan recently, while I was there I rode on the Hikari Rail Star (700 series) and a regular Hikari (300 series).
The shinkansen is a very reliable means of transportation, always on time...I think the average delay is about 24 seconds.
I hope to see some shinkansen trains for MSTS in the future. :)

To Matt Vince.
Hi Matt, glad you're thinking of a design and possibly a route for the Shinkansen. The Odawara-Shinjuku is of course out of the question as a limited and restricted speed cross-urban line and as far as I know a different gauge than the Shinkansen lines which are: 'Toukaidou-Sanyo''Hokkaido''Touhoku''Hokuriku' and 'Kyushu'I don't know what size the Shinkansen gauge is but obviously larger not that it matters in the sim. It would be great to 'stretch out' with these trains like the Amtrak and keeping to their strict timetables would be an activity in itself. I don't know the model numbers but only the names that the Japanese people call them and they are; 'Hikari' (100,300 and Railstar 700) Nozomi (700, which looks like sci-fi) Nozomi (500,which is the sharp nose),Haruka (1 and 2, which look like slower units) and the Kodama of course. You probably have this info but Noriko my girlfriend has been investigating for me so I want to help to get something going. I can try to get the route plans from her next. Regards John
All Shinkansen lines are standard gauge.
I rode on a 500 and a 700 back in January. Quite the thrill.
This is a little macabre, but when we got off the 500 at Kyoto we went to have a look at the engine and saw that the nose had a large brownish-red smear that I didn't recall being there in Tokyo. Wonder what we hit with our pointy little beak at ~270kmh?

Justa coupla remarks from an observer in the mysterious east...
Track gauge -- seems to me it is 60" (1524 mm), no more no less. Why it's not an even metric gauge (like 1500 mm) I can't imagine. But then, I'm going by faded memory here.
Reddish-brown smear -- I used to read in the Mainichi News about the occasional latter-day samurai who, despondent over some perceived loss of face, would commit "seppuku" on (i.e. in the path of) what was then the "New" Tokkaido line. Sounds like that's still as good a way to do one's self in as ever.

Rick, there is no broad gauge that I know of in Japan. Shinkansen lines are standard gauge (1435mm) and most other lines are 1067mm. See page 205 and following in Jane's World Railways 2000-2001, or many other sources.
As for your smear theory, I'm glad I wasn't eating when I read that. :o

Im working on it, but now Ive got a lot of other work to do + the route and several other MSTS things Im working on.
The reason why I didnt finish the Nozomi yet is because the texture is very hard to apply. When using only the textures from the side, it really looks good, but the front part is not very smooth.
Greetings,
Roni

LAST EDITED ON Jun-18-02 AT 01:34PM (EDT)[p]There's a possibility I might get involved in the Shinkansen debate. I'm gathering data at the moment. If I can get enough, I might do a Shinkansen pack. Might be free, might be commercial. Don't know yet, but I was thinking of doing all the trains right back from the first one.......Series 0 - 800 and E1 - E4.
It's all in my head right now though. I'd need a pretty damn good route to be built for them......

Chris, if that might-be Shinkansen pack would turn out to be as good as the ELP I would, in fact, be glad to spend some money on it! :D And this is not a thing I say easily, I should add!

Chris:
Yes, please!
Japanese equipment is sadly underrepresented in the msts world at the moment, and a shinkansen pack alone would go a long way to rectifying that. As for a "pretty damn good" route, I'm afraid that is beyond my capabilities, but I'd be willing to help in other ways, should they exist. Surely you're not still using a 2 GB drive, are you?
I don't really go for payware unless it's something I really want. A complete shinkansen set and your track record for quality means this would easily qualify.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-18-02 AT 11:48PM (EDT)[p]How about the MLX01 Shinkansen?? Anyone seen it? If not then take a look below. I belive that's what Japan call all their fast trains? It's a maglev anyway.
This one I'm thinking of doing next.

Hi Chris,
Itīs all in your head? What do we have to do to get it out of there? Bribe? Do you need some "steekpenningen"? (Dutch) If....IF...it is going to be just as good as your Euro*Loco pack...I am the first to orde one copy of the Shinkansen pack!!!
Let me know if you need some betatesting to be done!!
Greetings from a happy Euro*Loco pack user!!

First time poster. I am planning to do a 0 series w/appropriate cars. I don't know if anybody knows this, but there is no "loco" on a Shinkansen. Many small motors are distributed throughout the train so that the endcars don't have to be taken up by one giant engine. I believe this arrangement is called an EMU. I'm not sure if this is possible in MSTS, though. I guess you could design three types of car: endcar, coach, and powered coach(with pantograph). There were 16 cars in a normal 0 trainset, but now only 6, and modern 100 series Kodama service has 2 or 3 double-decker cars, as shown in this photo:

You're right. All Shinkansen are in EMU formation. The Series 500 and 700 have small motors whole train(No T-Cars arrangement). In MSTS,the Odakyu Series 7000 LSE and Series 2000 are already the EMUs.Also I read a post that some one talk the sharp head Shinkansen and it was a next generation. This train is called Series 100.And sometimes you will see the green one, this is Series 200 Model-3000.The head of Series 200 have snow sweepers.

This 400 Series is shorter than the units run on the Tokaido and Tohoku, and it is the first "Mini Shinkansen".The body length of 400 Series is 20m,shorter than the normal units.Another Shinkansen like this one is Series E3.

If someone could get the permission from the designer, the Vault
Express looks close to an E1 double decker shinkansen. All it needs is a repaint to add the second deck and a reshaping to make the body wider and the windscreen shorter and on more of a slope.

Well, as far as I know you CAN actually add "passenger capability" to powered vehicles! I remember downloading that oldtimer tram for use on the Number One route, and I'm almost 100% sure there were instructions to add a line that read like "PassengerCapacity ( xx ) " to the ENG file...just before the "Lights" section it was, I think.
