I'm not about to turn down any reference material. I do own practically every book written about N&W and the N&WHS has produced some excellent reference books with blueprints and drawings. But, some excursion pics might help to demonstrate the variations between rebuilt and 40's & 50's era. I intend to produce it as a regular 50's era engine with weathering etc.

Mike, man that's gorgeous!!! Any help that you need, I'm more than available. Just drop an e-mail on what you need, and since I might not know how to do it, I'll learn. I can just picture this pulling 100 or so of that H3 hopper that you're working on and the Cf caboose around the Sandpatch route that is being worked on. (I think Sandpatch will pass until we have a real Pocahomtas devision) Not trying to bug you about the hopper and caboose, but how are they coming? And again, if you meed something, just holler. If you don't mind, maybe I'll start working on a hooter later today and see how that comes out. Good luck!!!

I never even thought about Sandpatch. Good excursion route.

A hooter would be excellent. Might inspire me to work faster. (but not sloppier)

Magnificent work so far. Just remember, take your time and have fun. I may be an avid pennsy fan, but I am also a Norfolk and Western fan. Just wondering, did you know that the Pennsy controlled the Norfolk and Western during into the fifties?

TVRRMAN - did you know that for a while there that the N&W was the only thing keeping the PRR going? They would have merged much sooner if it wasn't for their investments in the Norfolk and Western.

SoRwy471 - Even though I haven't seen the cap, I would guess that's it much later than the 60's, probably more around the 80's or 90's. Alot of hats were made when NS was still running excursions.

You should know that you are picking a fight with N&W fans when you state that PRR owned them/controlled them.

N&W was one of the few railroads that stayed solvent through the Great Depression. This was due to the fact that everyone needed coal regardless; depression or not. They continued to develop steam through the depression, because they realized that it would be much more expensive to re-hire and re-train the mechanical department and the guys who built and repaired the engines.

So... when WWII came around and other roads were hurting for locomotive power, N&W had something like 30 2-8-8-2's to sell off as surplus. (that's amazing because of the huge increase in traffic from the war, you would expect there to be a motive power shortage) They went to PRR, D&RGW, AT&SF, UP & Virginian. I think some smaller stuff went to smaller regional railroads as well. Like 10 4-8-2's to Wheeling and D&RGW. 4-8-0's to various smaller, unheard of roads.

Now, the relevant part to PRR folks... PRR collected something like several billion dollars in today's dollars from it's N&W stock dividends. N&W stock sold at $100/share in the 30's & 40's (I'm not certain of a more specific date, but am certain of the amount) That's where the claim that N&W dividends kept PRR financially solvent come from.

The reason I point this out...
N&W was a relatively small line, compared to Pennsy, but they were run in an amazingly effective & efficient way. The employees were very proud of that fact. Other roads couldn't meet the Gross Ton Miles, etc... that they put out. So I suppose we N&W fans feel N&W never gets the respect we feel it deserves. Kind of like a little brother. :D

Then I guess you'll know who to ask for N&W specific buildings for the route...
Coal towers
Engine service Buildings "Lubritoriums"
Stations
Telephone poles

All the things that make it truly N&W

>To bad they stopped

That's the one reason why I HATE Norfolk Southern. I never got to ride on one of those excursions, and believe it or not, 611 is my favorite locomotive! I have lived my entire life (all 14 years of it) up here in New York. IF they kept their steam program going, they would be able to run up on the old Erie to Port Jervis because they now own the line. Didn't happen though.

Does anyone here think someone will come along and restore 611 (again)? The Virginia Museum of Transporation in Roanoke moves the 611 along its track every once in a while (even if its not under its own power, it still moves).

Keep up the good work on the 1218. O. Winston Link would be proud of you!

Thanks for the head-up. I'm just crazy enough that I've already saved and archived almost all the pics there on my harddrive (about 3000). I have them categorized by subject. There are 2 good backhead photos of A's.

I'd really like to model the cab just a little bit. At least seats, brake stand, johnson lever, cutoff lever, etc. If I can do with reasonable amount of poly's. Maybe 2 versions - one with; one without.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-07-02 AT 09:33PM (EDT)[p]Hi all I'm working on the Pocahontas Route. Will be from williamson to Bluefield.I just finished redoing the dems in the new demex program.I finally got track charts from N&WHS but there around 1950.I'm thinking about getting year 2000 charts for the NS,just have'nt made up my mind.I'm useing USAPhoto map now to get cords for the Tug River and cutting in the river in the RE.Boy I had to pick a route that follows a river almost all the way. It's going to take awhile to cut in the river.Oh well give time to decide on the what charts I'm going to use.You all have probley seen some of my work before just messing around in the RE.I also have several books from N&W so if I can be of any help just let ne know. drcvrc@earthlink.net

nwman,
I was hoping you were still lurking out there somewhere. I remembered seeing the pics of the route you were developing. I sure hope you will consider doing a version of the N&W in the 50's. It could be quite a bit more interesting with N&W's unique steam facility structures. If you do plan to do something of the sort, I have many, many references of N&W buildings/industries and would like to help you make them. We could probably have a lot of fun trying to recreate historical photos like some of O. Winston Link's on your route. If you are interested, contact me at my e-mail.

i dont normally post, but this engine is brings back memorys. I rode it three times out of buffalo. I remember being behind it about 10 cars or so. It was just as the trip started and i was waiting to see it in action for the first time. Finally we hit a curve sharp enough where i could see the whole engine and tender, it was one of the most beatiful things i have ever seen!
And that single bell hooter whistle. WoW! I have also been on the 611 about 2 or 3 times. I dont really design or anything, so the only help i could be is from experiences. It was a very sad day when i heard they shut down the NS steam program. That day changed the whole complextion of mainline steam travel in the northeast forever. Well anyways thank you for starting this project....im sure it will be highly anticipated! And good luck!

Thanks for the kind words. I have those same memories of 1218. My Grandfather used to take me on trips with it and 611. He even sweet-talked them into letting us into the cab, by mentioning he was a fireman on it back in the 40's. He ran from Portsmouth to Columbus, Ohio on the A's. 1218 was regularly assigned to Portsmouth, so he did run on that very engine. So this is more than just "something to do" for me.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see the subject in your screen name running in the Sim at some point. A great engine and a popular one. I'm surprised no one has made an attempt to create one yet.

The N&W was a very well run railroad and a pioneer in steam technology. The J class was designed so well that one man could push it on level track. I think the most amount of N&W stock the PRR owned was 30%. The dividends from that stock did help the PRR during the hard times. Most of the businesses the PRR delivered freight to were really affected by the economy. Like most of the Northeast railroads, the production and manufacturing companies closing down in the region, especially in the big cities, hurt the railroads tremendously. As mentioned before, the N&W shipped primarily coal and did it well, and not only survive the hard times but made significant profits. I think they even owned a lot of coal rich land. When the desperate PRR and NYC wanted to merge, I think the government made the PRR get rid of all its holdings of the N&W stock as a condition of the merger. This was one of the many contributing factors that doomed Penn Central. I liked the N&W and I liked the Southern, but I’m having a hard time trying to accept the NS.

I got in the cab of the 611 on the first trip i was on. I was really young, i barely remember othere than the picture of me in the cab window. What i really wanted to do was blow the whistle! And even though i never got the chance to do it on the 611, i did on the 1218. All i got was a 2 second blast but it was a feeling i tresure to this day. I later found out the man that let me pull the cord was grahm claytor himself. Im sure someone will make the 765 sooner or later. How bout the 765 on the new river gorge route.WOW.I cant wait till next year when they bring the 765 back to service. I am actually going down to help out with restoration efforts for a couple days this summer. Well thanks. I will definetly be checking the forum for you progress.
