View Full Version : How do you define the wheel base of a locomotive/railcar?

I believe if I may shrink the wheelbase of the cars I'm using they will flow through tight radius turns such as other MSTS locomotives will do.
If not, would someone point me in the right direction on how to fit my 48' car through a 90d 75ft turn?

I think goal of most the modeling being done for MSTS is to remain prototypical. When you start to convert cars so they no longer match the prototype, you sort of raise a few eyebrows.
There have been some "tweaks" to make items such as long heavy duty flats with dual bogies per kingpin operate normally. (At least thats one of the only conversations I can remember at the moment).
48' seems like a pretty common length and I would imagine that quite a few cars in your consist would need adjusting. Are you sure you want to do that?
You might want to get the "track crew" to lay new roadbed. :-)

The visual model is correct, and the turn radius is slightly exagerated (about 5') so MSTS will handle the turn smoothly. Yet I cannot take more than a 2 car train through it without an excessive amount of speed and power....

Maybe you can adjust the car paramaters in the wag file; IE
Maxtilt, mass, Inertia Tensor, Adheasion, friction...
heck, like I know what I'm talking about. :-)

According to everything I've ever heard, the second line in the Friction definitions controls the behavior of the wagon in turns. Try playing with that.
