View Full Version : Pantograph Height
LAST EDITED ON Jun-08-02 AT 08:45PM (EDT)[p]Ottodad also asked this question. Mismatch of panto with wire height can be solved by changing the wire height figure in the route .trk file - I know about that.
But that fixes just one loco and fellas, the effective panto height for locos is all over the map - there simply is no standard that is being observed by anyone, not that I can see.
So. Last time - yep, I searched the archives and all that, no luck - can the individual LOCO pantos be adjusted for height, if so how do we go about it? This has to be done in some way during the creation of the loco files, doesn't it?
Thanks for the help,

In the MSTS traction world, we've settled for 20 feet. This applies to streetcars and interurbans, not heavy electric. This was possible due to the fact that there was no US traction when we decided, and all cars are being built to that standard. The problem is, it appears that the MSTS idea of 20ft and TSM's idea of 20ft are two different things...
I don't think the actual pan height of the model can be changed, unless the original designer is willing to do so. If anyone wants one of my interurbans with a particular pole height, I'm happy to send them a new .s file, but I don't know about anyone else.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-09-02 AT 08:27AM (EDT)[p]So you're saying it IS possible to change a model's effective pantograph height?
I'm getting a mixed message here: First its no, it can't be done, then yes it can, you will send out a modified .s file. Sorry if I am misunderstanding the message.
If you are referring to the height of overhead wire, no need to do this in an .s file. Just open the .trk file for the route and change the figure. But that means only that one loco is fixed - if you have three other electrics, they are likely to have three different effective panto heights, some lower than the wire, some higher.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-09-02 AT 10:15AM (EDT)[p]I think what he is saying it can be done, but only with the 3D model source file itself. It's not something that is editable by anyone else. You need the source file itself, which of course is the property of the designer themselves. The fact that Matt is offering this service is a credit to him!!
For interurban fans, it is very nice.
Well, at least this time around my question was answered. One more log for the Kuju pile - if indeed they are capable of doing anything about it.
Thanks all for the input. A heavy electric with its panto about two feet ABOVE the wire looks silly as heck. We'll just have to live with it.
Actually, I've learned a lot: At first I thought "flashing panto" was something the police would arrest you for if you did it in public. So you see, not all is lost. Now I know better - if I do a flashing panto in the privacy of my own home, I can not be prosecuted.
