Copied from MSN Communities (good tip):
+++++++++++++++
So you want to build your own route? But can't find the shapes that are used in the supplied route? Well here is how, but first - I DO NOT EXCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR AN MESS-UPS THAT HAPPEN TO YOUR MACHINE.
OK, with that out of the way here we go.
We will use the name 'test' as your route name (subsitute your real name where needed).
Next we will say that you want to use the shapes from the Flying Scotsman route.
1.) Copy the shape files from the Europe1 shapes directory into the 'test' shape directory.
2.) Next copy the 'settleca.ref' to the root directory of 'test' (You will find a file in the directory called 'test.ref'
3.) Rename the file 'test.ref' to 'test.old'
4.) Rename the copied 'settleca.ref' file to 'test.ref'
5.) Open the route editor, choose 'open' from the file menu, select the route 'test'. on the left is an option to something somethinf database, click the box then press 'OK'
You should now have the shapes appear in your objects menu.
IF ANYTHING SHOULD GO WRONG, JUST RENAME 'TEST.OLD' BACK TO 'TEST.REF'

Hey thanks for the tip on how to use objects from other routes on a new route but you also need to copy the texture file or you get an error in the program. Thanks again at least we can use the objects now for our routes.

Awesome! That worked for me, and yes, you do have to copy all the 'TEXTURE' files from one route to the other.

Also, if you don't want to go through this process for every new route you create, you could perform the above steps on the 'Template/Shape' and 'Template/Texture' folders.

The thing is, the browse function in the Route Geometry Editor don't work. If it did, all you would have to do is browse to the folder for what routes objects and terrain you wish to use and you would be finished. Easy as that. As it is now, it will only default to a template directory. In the template directory it only has the few objects that you see after you create a route. On the good side, I do think they will fix this.

I still get the same old Japanese "tracks". How do get to use other "tracks"? every track I make I aways get the same Japanese concrete tie tracks.

You can also copy the terrtex files (from the terrtex maps in eur1+2 jap1+2 and usa 1+2) to your own route terrtex map)
And if you want more sound options then copy the sounds from only one map (euro1 or 2 or jap 1 or 2 or usa 1 or 2) to your route sound map and copy the ssource.dat from one of this map to your trainsim directory
This also work with me

Do you have 'Show thumbnails' checked in the object selection box? If so, try unchecking that and see how it goes.
