Hi,
I've been wondering if this can be done.
Can you place Freight cars and loco's along the tracks as objects? I want to place some near and on the tracks to simulate a derailment, place the wreck train near it and run an activity with slow orders by the wreck site. Any ideas?

Sure. On the main map screen of the activity editor right click on track you want to put the car(s) and choose "place a consist".
I did the derailed train in an activity I did called "Train#178".

I think the question more relates to putting freight cars as objects beside the track to simmulate a wrecked train.
I have never actually tried this, I had ideas for putting a couple of box cars (40' ones) as store rooms in a yard.
I suspect you would have to copy the S, SD and ACE file for the cars you require from the TRAINSET directory to the SHAPES and TEXTURES and then add them to the route REF file.
If this is all a bit heavy, then there may be an alternative, keep watching this space and I may give a try.
Perhaps some-one cleverer than me will give you an answer.

Andy is exactly right. I have done it several times. Just make sure when you edit the Ref file that the Filename is exactly the same as the shape (.s) name. In Description you can call it anything you want. I created a new object category called "Static Trains" however, you could put them in Clutter or anywhere you want.

Can they be set to stick to the tracks?

There are already a few waggons ( a flat car & track repair train) which can be used as scenery objects in MSTS.

Hi,
Detailed instructions on how to do this were posted here some time ago. I don't have the url but it should be retrievable from the archive.

There is one significant problem if freight cars and locomotives are used as static objects in routes that are going to be distributed. I planned to use a variety of different freight cars and locomotives in Sea View, but only ended up using one, a Southern Railway boxcar. The *.ace files are very large and add up quickly making distribution a potential problem.
