still seeing a lot of Alco controllers in F7 and E8 cabs
These pics from the web show what it should look like, particularly if you sit this side :-)

This is the type of control stand which I styalised in my GP7 cab to make use of the existing animated controls. It can be transplanted into other cabins given that rare resource - time.

I thought that the photos of the EMD F Series cab were scanned backwards unless this EMD F unit was exported to another country where engineers sit on left side instead of right side. Japan is one of those countries. I couldn't believe the rust on the interior panels and an automotive-type window crank for the side window. Jeffrey.

Those gauges are not reversed, so it' is an export unit. Gotta be an Aussie E unit. V Line class 20? CR (Commonwealth Railways) CL Class? Might be a CR S class?

Hey Kurt and you all!
You are nearly right!
The cab is from a GM preserved at Port Dock Museum

This loco looks a lot like an F unit. was built about 1952 by Clyde who operate as a full licencee to EMD. The loco is longer and lower than an F unit and sits on 6 wheel trucks The trailing loco in this photo is one of these units with 4 traction motors.
The lead unit, an upgraded version has new bogies fitted 3 traction motors. These bogies designed by Clyde Australia were, after being found to be an improvement, were then used in the States which up untill this only used 2 traction motors per bogie.
These locos operated fast freight and Passenger trains accross the Nullabor Desert, home of the longest straight railway line in the World. It is very hot and dusty, and air conditioning was not available. So we ordered these engines with 1950 Chevy wind-up windows, hence the winder seen on the control stand.
The A6EL air brake stand was rebuilt from an A6ET stand rescued from scrapped a steam engine.

Well, you know what? That's an S class. It's based on the U.S. E unit, which is also a "streched F unit." Here is a pic:

Well actually Kurt, not to be a rivet counter (LOL), but technically the FP series were the "stretched F units". The E-units were more like 2 Fs on a single chasis (Dual Prime Movers Generators Etc.) with 3 axle trucks (A1A) instead of 2 axle trucks (B)... BTW, I know you know that, just jerking your chain! :-)

So the .S class has one prime mover? I was wondering why the roof and side vents were only in the center!

OK Kurt I can see you need some re-education on Aussie Railroads
1/ In 1952 Australia looked for a mainline engine replacement.
several Companies settled on the EMD F Unit type of loco.
2/ La Grange insisted that no changes be made...but
3/ Loading gauge restricted our height...overhead power was set to a minimum 14 feet (or there abouts) and so did bridges and tunnels
4/ Victorian Railways wanted to get rid of turn tables and insisted on cabs at both ends. (they only needed single units on most trains.
5/ our railroad was laid on light trackbed and rails restricting the axle loads to less than 15 tons in some cases!
6/ Clyde Engineering set up a plant in NSW and finally convinced La Grange to allow us our different bodies, after all the Standard F7 just would not fit!

7/ Victoria ordered 26 "B" Class Diesels 567/1500 hp Co-Co trucks. Dynamic Brakes, and full cabs at each end.

GM-first series: See trailing Loco in previous Alice Springs Photo!

8/ Commonwealth Rail ordered a group of "GM" Locos 567/1500 hp
but fitted A-1-A trucks. Subsequently all new orders went to Co-Co trucks. Single Cabs

9/ New South Railways favoured Alco equipped Locomotives but ordered "42" Class Locomotives as well 567/1500hp Co-Co, D-Brakes

GM-Second Series
See lead Loco in previous Alice Springs Photo!

10/ The last series of GM were upgraded in HP and fitted Dynamic
Brakes (You can see the two types in the picture previous post)

11/ About this time Victoria added to the GM order and ordered
"S" class single ended Diesels also Co-Co and 1800hp, Dynamics

12/ NSW retained the "Bulldog" nose in their next model and created a similar Loco to the new GM but added a plain full cab to the other end ie no nose, just door over the coupler and windows and called it a "421" Class. Photos when I can find some.

13/ Commonwealth seemed to have a "love Affair" with both La Grange and the Bulldog nose! Their next Locomotives with this nose were 3000hp!
Wonder if I got down on my knees if one of you fine Loco builders would build some of these for us }> Many Photos on the net!! and I could get the dimensions easy enough.
Cheers :-)

Ok...will read this a few times and then respond....lots of info to swallow! I noticed on the B class, the winshield is raked slightly more...must be the 14' thing. Gotta be the nicest E ever.
