After checking out the manuals on site - [link:www.dnaco.net/~gelwood|George Elwood's Fallen Flags] , I noticed that the early Geep units (i.e. GP38) used a power selector lever and the throttle as control for the dynamic brakes vs the current setup of the MSTS GP38-2 has with a seperate dynamic brake lever. Can anyone give me info on this?

Basically what you had was a power/brake lever. You'd push the lever to the right and the throttle handle did what it was suppose to do.If you push this lever to the left the same throttle handle was used as the dynamic brake controller.in this position the throttle handle performed as a rheostat, you didn't have any notches to contend with and you could modulate the dynamic brakes.Bear in mind the lever was alot smaller than the throttle/dynamic brake handle. The NS railroad, which I worked for had alot of units set up in this configuration.

Howdy,
There is also the EMD type with the afore mentioned "selector lever" above the throttle. This lever when actuated, on the MILWAUKEE ROAD SD40-2, had 4 "notches" but really, you moved the handle al the way, and it moved one click..kinda like a socket wrench, just not as many clicks.
The selector lever gave you the following choices power, B, 1, and 2. Power was the throttle, B was dynamic brake which made the throttle "Notchless" to provide the braking using the 8 provided positions. 1 was a manually selected transition position, as was 2. the window had a wheel with power and brake on the top, and a separate wheel with 1 and 2 below.
In the early 2nd generation, MANY manual transition units were still around, so EMD equipped these units for this at the customers request.
I hope this helps!!
