View Full Version : Can't we make the AI horn blow?

Come on all you experts. We've got the wav files, we've got "triggers" in the route to ring a crossing bell when our train approaches. Can't we somehow identify the approach of an AI train and play the horn wav for that train?

I do lots of switching. Stop my train in a siding clear of a grade crossing (break it up if necessary to keep the local politicians happy) - and the AI trains whiz by without so much as a toot. Someone's gonna get killed!

Hmmm interesting one.

Firstly, unless you have changed the default .sms files then your AI trains are only making the 'generic' loco sounds. They play what is defined under Scalibility Level 0. They don't respond to Variable1 or 2 related triggers, only Speed. Secondly, from my experience to date AI trains seem to be Descrete_Trigger unaware. However that may be because no engine events occur for AI's ie. steam loco's move but their exhaust always stays white, because their regulator value stays at 0. However, the crossing triggers are world enviroment, not engine environment, so they may work.

I'll try it out and post back.

Well, I added an extra stream and inserted a single trigger for Discrete_Trigger 3 (as used in crossing.sms), ref'd with a horn .wav file. To double check aliasing/syntax etc, I also added an additional trigger for the same sound file against Speed_Inc_Past 0.

I set up an activity near a crossing. The AI sounds could be heard, the horn sounded as it pulled away from stationary but no horn sounded as it approached/passed the crossing. Ran several variations to cross check, but no joy.

Seems AI's only now what speed they are doing and what signals say, the rest of the world around them they are oblivious to!

Oh well, it was an interesting problem/analysis exercise. Those AI trains will continue to be artificial.

Thanks for trying
