Chaging sms files

I HAD (keyword HAD) an idea on how to get chatter in side the cabview, but I got stuck here;
Inside (
PassengerCabinFile ( [SW]-SD40-UP3775.s )
PassengerCabinHeadPos ( -1.2 3.5 5.5 )
RotationLimit ( 30 170 0 )
StartDirection ( 0 0 0 )
Sound ( "gp38cab.sms" )

I understand all this, BUT can I change the .sms file to a completly new one, w/o skreweing the outside or the '1' view sounds up???

is it possible to add a line of coding in the .sms file to set a new line to a new line in the file (try and stay with me here) like something like this

Variable_Trigger ( Variable2_Inc_Past 0.550 StartLoop ( 1 File ( "gp_power_cruise5.wav" -1 ) SelectionMethod ( SequentialSelection ) ) )
Variable_Trigger ( Variable2_Inc_Past 0.850 ReleaseLoopRelease () )

except with new .wav files in spot of the current .wav. That would work with something like the bell, like if you trigered the bell wit the b button it would play that. But would it keep looping, or can I take the loops out?

In theory I could just go into the sound folder and completly overwrite the current bell .wavs, but that defeats the general purpose of this, I would be scaficing the current bell in the outside view. I dont want to do that, I want to do it so its ONLY in the '5' view.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-18-02 AT 07:26PM (EST)[p]What I would do is look at some of the external views, see how they play the random sounds, and try to incorporate that into your new .sms file. That way it'll play random files for radio chatter every now and then. I think that would be a better effect than having to replace anything, or having to trigger the chatter yourself. Also, it would allow you to use multiple audio files, one of which would be selected at random--you wouldn't hear the same thing over and over again. Just a suggestion as to what I would look into. . .

I get what ur saying, but I dont get what I would need to do. Isnt the .sms file, ONLY the sms file in the cabview?

P.S. I know it didnt happen, but I dont think ANY NFC team could of tooken the Rams at home in this kind of condition.

What's the status on this?

I sent sample files to Troub last week. (two of the batch were rejected because of a full mailbox, interesting stuff in the MOW file)

I'd still like to know how you are planning to do this for my own personal routes.

Nope. Sorry. No email this week.

Hotmail really bites as an email service. Yahoo! offers free email id's and allows for a 6x larger inbox size with 'filtering' options.

I did send the MOW sample file to Troub to review.

The Circus is in Charlotte this weekend, their 'circus train' is parked off on one of the sidings in northwest Charlotte. This makes for very interesting radio 'chatter'

The circus will be leaving charlotte sometime Monday. If all goes as it has in the past, the Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus Train will travel through my backyard sometime Monday morning. I try to video tape them and make an AVI or MPEG of them going by. I have videos of them from several previous years.

Hey guys, sorry again :-(

Anyway, Greg, I think I got one of your emails, and I did get the MOW .wav file. Now, how exactly do you want the .sms file set up to play them? Right now, the way I have it figured out, the radio chatter files will play randomly in the cab. I thought that would be kind of cool just to have some noise going on, but it won't work for anything specific, like defect detectors or instructions. I might be able to figure out how make distinct triggers for sounds, though, but I'd have to play around with it for a while. I have a couple of other things that I have to finish in the next day or two, then I can look at this project a little more closely. Really, I think there is a lot that can be done. I don't really see what the big mystery is about the .sms files, they look pretty straightforward to me, with a little reverse-engineering (I do have a degree in Comp. Sci., though, so that might have something to do with it :-) ). Anyway, thanks for being patient, and look for some real results with this in 4 or 5 days. Just let me know exactly what kind of behavior you're looking for, and I'll see what I can do.

By the way, I just recently reinstalled Windows 2000 on my computer, and the sound card has been messed up, like it only wants to play a couple of audio streams at a time, and if asked to do more, it chokes and stutters and crashes the game. It should be able to do many many many streams, it's a SoundBlaster Live! card, and I've never had any problems with it before. I just need to reinstall the drivers, and I don't anticipate any problems. If I do have some problems, though, the aforementioned timetable could change, as I can't test the sounds very well if they're not working :D

Yep, I'm working on it. I think I know what'll work (at least for the random triggering right now), but my sound card keeps messing up and I haven't gotten around to hooking up my old computer to get the good drivers for it (the ones now on the Creative website are crap). I'll finish messing with the .sms file, and I'll send it to you soon. I'm pretty sure it'll work, and it can't hurt anything as long as you make a backup! :-)

Here's an idea, The bridges, crossing, pavement, tunnels etc. and all sorts of things have sounds that play in the cab and passenger views and interupt the regular track sounds. They can be placed in the route editor, and you could certainly sacrifice a few to have a hot box detector or whatever. just substitute the sound file you want to hear, into that object's sound file.

Thanks for the work. I am most interested in the 'how was it done' of this work, so I can apply it to my 'home town' route.

FWIW Hotmail only allows emails < 1MB in size. This won't cause me any problems. But Greg may have a problem with anything > 1MB in an email. All the wav files I sent out to both of you got bounced back to me from hotmail's mail server.

I'll check to see how large they are, I might be able to temporarily place them in my web space, and I can send a link to download. Basically what I was going to email was the .sms file, along with instructions about what to do to get your own sounds to play. Then, if you guys think it works ok, I can upload it to the file library (the .sms and instructions, to avoid distributing .wav files for both size and FCC/privacy/intercepted-communications-type reasons).

I tried to send you the files, and each one got bounced back from Yahoo!. They said your mailbox was almost full. Try to clean out the stuff in the 'mailbox' and the 'spambox/bulkmailbox' they set up automatically for everyone.

But, on the upside, Troub's .sms file worked great. Just rolling down the tracks and 'presto' radio static followed by radio chatter.

Send me an email when you get the Yahoo box emptied out.

I've been following along in this thread for a while. Tried the track sound approach to making a detector a while back. Never achieved the right results, then got side tracked on a couple other projects. What I ended up with was detector that never shut up. As I approached the point where I had the sound set to start, you'd hear it faintly in the distance. as you got nearer the wav file would repeat getting louder. I made a wav file that just said "detector - no defects, repeat, no defects" As you got closer to the point where the track sound was placed, the audio got louder. As I passed over the point it was just right, but then as leaving the area it would repeat over and over fading out until it was gone. I'd have to dig back in some backups to see what I did exactly to get it to that point. I know I had to add something to the ttype.dat file and seems like some tweaking to an sms file somewhere.

Sounds as if your sms config is set to StartLoop rather than PlayOneShot. You can also define a Distance related volume curve, this could be used to stop you hearing the sound from too far away. If you'd like me to do an sms for you just mail me the .wav file.

I've got bunches of stuff working along these lines. Once I get moved in the next couple of weeks, I hope to release these types of things and lots of other stuff I have lying around. I made some trackside recordings a while ago that I'm using for my own track sounds, they just need finishing up. Also, I've got some great stuff going for random radio noise and chatter in the cab (as opposed to a repeating loop), I just need to gather together the right sound files. Oh, what I'd be able to finish if I had more time. . . :-)
