what do the different scalability groups differentiate? Group 5 always has the most content and I read a post saying that group 0 is for AI, but what are 3 and 1 for?
Second, will .wag files support a brake apply trigger? I'm thinking of a short squeal as the brake shoes first touch the wheels. Guess I'll try it and see if it works, is just ignored or crashes the Sim.

Scalability levels are used in determining which sounds to play based on the sound quantity slider in MSTS options. The lower the quantity of sounds, the lower the number of the scalability level that's used.

SL 0 = AI
SL 1 = Low quality
SL 3 = Medium quality
SL 5 = High quality
SL 2 & 4 don't equate to any specific level. They can be found to be used in some .sms files but give the same sound as the next level below,ie 2 -> 1, 4 -> 3.
The sim will use the highest level defined in each .sms that does not exceed the level for the main sound quality setting.

Ken:
Did you ever hear from anyone about getting brake sounds to trigger in a wag file? I thought that was a great idea you had.

(If I have a few hours to kill I might play with it, but I'm still a real novice at this stuff)

No, but I think I'm going to wait until the weekend to experiment so if I crash the Sim big time and have to reinstall, it won't ruin my evening.
I've been following another thread about crossing bell sounds dropping out with 4 or more locomotives ... there must be a limit to how many sounds TS tries to play. I'm wondering now if connecting a brake sound with each car in a longish train might put it over the edge.
Maybe somehow connecting the sounds to the 2-key and 3-key views might be better ... then whatever cars are closest in the view would be "apparently" emitting the sound.

That's a good point - I think there is a limit on the number of sounds (or sound sources). Every wag already has a sound file - "generalfreightwag1.sms" (or ...2, or ...3). Maybe if we can find what triggers the brake sounds in the engine, and add that trigger to the generalfreightwagx.sms we can do it!
Keep us informed about your progress.
