I saw the movie "Bad Day At Black Rock" today, the best that old movie (made in 1955) I've ever seen. It had great scene of Spencer Tracy beating the hell out of Ernest Borgnine with just one arm... but that was not the best part. The best part was the Southern Pacific Streamliner, pulled by a F7 (my guess) arriving and leaving to and from the station in the beginning and the end of the movie.

What struck my ear was the whine of the traction motors, sounded really good, along with the diesel engine roaring. I'd like to do new sms-files for the F7's and other similiar locos, currently they are using the GP38 sounds.

What I need is good samples of real F7 diesel engines and some traction motor samples, if anyone has 'em. Just e-mail them to me if you wanna help with this little project.

I noticed that the new 3DTS SD70 sounds like a traction motor at speed (45mph above) It freaked me out, cause I through it was a sound problem!! I guess the idling locos do have an advantage!!

When we release the final versions of the Train Artisan F-7's you'll have plenty of traction whine. I actually had to go in and pull the engine up a bit because the traction motors were so loud on this unit. I have in the can right now sound sets for F and E units, the F release should be soon and the E's not to far away.

If you have an account at trainorders.com, you can go to the multi-media library and download a couple of good traction motor whines. Pop them into a good editor, sample the whine and it can be played with to a fare-thee-well. I've been collecting sounds from a number of sources to mix a sound file for a Baldwin-Westinghouse Steeple Cab I'm working on.
