LAST EDITED ON Feb-05-02 AT 02:44PM (EST)[p]Are there any programs out there that allows you to make your own horn, instead of having to use recordings, if so where can I find one?

You should be able to do this with any program that will let you create and edit a waveform. I think you can do this in Goldwave, but I haven't tried to fiddle with it yet. You could use a synthesizer to get a chord, or a rough wave, and use Goldwave to fine tune it. I'm pretty sure this is possible, I'll play with it and let you know...My patch is almost finished downloading, though, so I suspect I will be occupied elsewhere for the rest of the night!

I have abandoned the patch..what a waste of time. I'll try to do some messing around tonight or tomorow. From what I see just briefly, you willllll eed to get a wave (not a .wav) in a sawtooth for the actual horn sound. then it would be a matter of adjusting pitches and mixing "noise" into it, getting a good attack and release. It looks like it would be a challenging project. Much more realistic than getting those damned coal hoppers to load with animation!

Anyway, it should be fun. Keep me updated on your progress, too.

Thanks,

John.

P.S. my email is not working for some reason, so post here.

I use a program which came with the PC.

I think its called "Creative Wave Studio".

The trick is to copy the two horn files from an existing loco.

Typically horn1.wav and x_horn1.wav.
The file starting with the x is the outside sound.

Check the properties for each file, the cab sound is in stereo and the "X file" is mono.

Sadly the editor I use does not support "loop markers", so you dont get the nice "hold the space bar down for long blasts"

Best of luck.

I use Sound Forge v5 to edit the sounds. This program will let you add looping markers and plain old "markers". I found out that the recordings that come with the game have BOTH in there, but they work much better if the loop markers are deleted and normal markers are left in place. Why? With the loop markers, the recording will only loop inbetween the loop markers regardless of any other markers in between. However, plain old markers will loop to the next marker only after you let go of the space bar enabling shorter toots. The tricky part is placing the markers in places that will make it sound well. One of ther guys on here tipped me off to that - Thanks!! Someone told me the program "multiquence" will work but I havent had the time to try that out. I got something that works for me so Im gonna stick with it. You dont have to get two recordings either, you can simply use both for the in cab and outside sounds, just making one mono and the other stereo (forget off hand which is which) and just edit it using the EQ to make them sound different

It's possible to use mono files only. (Well I think you may as well if the original isn't in true stereo, but is just replicated stereo).

You specify the same mono .wav files in both the external (mono) .sms and the internal (stereo) .sms. In the internal .sms there will be the Stereo () command. Leave it in as this turns off the distance related effects. Then under each Stream with mono .wav's insert a FrequencyCurve that forces playback at 5512hz rather than the default 11025hz. If there already is a frequency curve then just halve all the existing values.

It works as I have done this.
