I would like to create realistic GP-9 audio for MSTS. I have a
60 min. recording of the N&W 857 (GP-9) I recorded back in the
early 80's with the recorder right out side the rear cab door.
This recorded great, put it on your stereo and it sounds like the unit is in your living room.
If anyone is familiar with CSI Trainmaster simulator they have
a wave file for idle and a separate wave file for throttle positions 1-8. MSTS does not do that.
I would like to know if anyone has any ideas on how to setup
MSTS wher you could make wave files from the recording I have
and utilize them in MSTS. The recording I have has a lot of
kicking cars, wheel slip, and the old brake noise before cobra
brake shoes took over.
Any one who would like to assist please let me know, I have the
recording zapped to cd.
Note I also have the following:
Sou 2857 (gp-38) 2 hrs switching
NW 4157 (gp-38) 1 hr
NW 2908 (gp-30) 2 hrs
NW 1357 (gp-40) 1 hr
If we can come up with a way to get correct idle and 1-8
to work like the real thing the recording I have would be
a great resource.

None of the current sound sets that I'm aware of do that, but you could do it. It all has to do with the way the .sms files are written. The default sounds use six different .wav files and the simulator pitch-shifts some of them to play all nine throttle positions.

I'm pretty sure it can be done. You will have to set up both a .eng file to provide 8 trottle positions then a .sms file (using Variable2) to shift .wavs at the corresponding levels.
Start point though would be to create the 9 .wav files needed. They should be of a sequence that loops seamlessly, and be long enough not to sound repetitive when looping but not so long that they cause backing up in the sound stream if triggered to change to quickly. I'd say around about 5 secs.
Unless your recording is truly stereo I'd stick with just making mono files. These can be frequency shifted in the cab sounds .sms to play back correctly.

Howdy,
My 2 cents worth, Contact Rob Esterday and see what you two can cook up. This sim would definately benifit from your sounds!! IMHO, the GP40 would really be nice if you have a recording of the throttle from idle to run 8!!
I hope you are able to accomplish this task!!
