Is there any way, to reduce the volume of the "track sounds" in the cab view, relative to the engine sounds? My goal is to reduce the track noise level so you hear more of the diesel. This is particularly true in the SD70 cab, which is often isolated in real life (depending on the road) and does not pick up as much of the track noise.

I had that same problem. I went into the ttype.dat file for whatever route you want to change. And I changed the default track sound from the USA track to the JapanTrack0 sounds. I think it gives a better sound for welded rail ( no clickety -clack!) Also, you can find the USAtrack1in.sms file in your MS sound folder open it to see what .wav file it uses - for example
"mp_rail_low2.wav" - open this wav file with your sound recorder and edit - "decrease volume by 25%" or how ever much you want until your satisfied.

Thank you Dennis, I'll give those suggestions a go.
