View Full Version : Traction - who wants what?

Hi all,

Time for a quick survey. If you could have any piece of traction created for MSTS, what would it/they be? TSM is a wonderful thing, and the possibilities are great. My choices are

1) A generic Brill semi-convertable
2) PCC
3) Birney
4) A generic Niles wooden interurban

Well, it seems I'm in luck. All of these cars are either underway or are on peoples' to-do list. I'm working on the Niles car and I've just started the birney. Of course, the common thread is that these cars have plenty of repaint options.

Who's next?

Cheers,
Matt A

1) Pre-war original style PCC
2) Post-war 1947+ PCC with standee windows.
3) Blackpool Balloon, twin and single destination screens.
4) Blackpool Brush Car, twin and single destination screens.
5) Generic type Peter-Witt car.

Well, let me see....
I like the older turn-of-the(last)-century to 1920's equipment. I'd like to see....
1.A Maguire Snow-Sweeper with snow-effects.
2.A St.Louis Car Co. P.A.Y.E. double-truck semi-convertible, standard AND narrow gauge.
3.A Brill Council Crest 500-series of Portland, Oregon fame (my Grandad's route), also narrow-gauge.
4.A Hollywood car in both Pacific Electric and PEPCO colors.
5.A Brill Master Unit.

Well, that should keep us busy, heh, heh.

Tim

PS~ Matt, how many windows is the Niles you're working on. And are they the flat arched windows, or the gothic arched? The reason I'm asking is PRL&P had two, one of which was re-built with an open platform and named "Portland" and I'd thought about that one for the to-do list. Aw, heck, here's a nice picture of it at River Mill Dam, 1910-ish.

Besides the Mesaba cars that Matt is working on, here's my dream list:
1. North Shore Electroliner
2. Illinois Terminal Streamliner
3. "Late Model" PCC wide-body (Minneapolis/St. Paul)
4. Train of standard North Shore cars
I'll keep working on the route, you folks build the cars!

Yippee!! Now we have our own section in the message boards.

I think that, at least for most North American traction fans, the PCC has the most universal appeal. My favorite version of this model is the pre-war air-electric. City cars as exemplified by the Perley Thomas cars of the city of New Orleans are classics along with both single and double-truck Birneys similar to those which will begin operations this fall in Tampa, Florida. Check out http://www.gomacotrolley.com/ for a look.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-05-02 AT 06:43PM (EDT)[p]Hi Tim and everyone,

Here are two prototype pics of the Niles car that is starting to take shape in TSM. The first one shows it in its original Milwaukee Northern Ry condition
http://forums.flightsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3cfe8fd16966d783.jpg

These cars were rebuilt by TMER&L (The Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Co) in the late twenties, and ended up looking like this...
http://forums.flightsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3cfe91c26e342d76.jpg

Of course, with texture alterations, the flat-topped window cars are possible, with many variations of car able to be done. Thanks to Dave's Railpix for the pics.

Hi all;
My first love is Pacific Electric. Any of the rolling stock used thru the eras of operation. I lived in Brooklyn New York from 1938 til 1949, and rode most of every subway & trolly line that was in operation. It is my hope that many traction cars & trolleys will be modeled & I encourage those that do.
My computer specs are in my profile.

Chuck,

I think that's a roaringly good idea. I thought of this myself today while building a special design truck for the boxcab I'm building. I've got a K-36 controller already, and I'd be happy to upload it to the library, possibly along with the Fuller 2-motor truck. I'm going to make some brake equipment and other appurtances, too. But all in due time. But yah, that's a great one!

Okay, here's another piece that would be a "must-have" for any traction property:
http://forums.flightsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3d0390eb0e0c5962.jpg

A street-sprinkler, used to keep down the dust along tracks in the streets.

I don't have any plans for this, is there anyone out there who might have of a similar unit? Matt? ( T.M.E.R.L.)

A sprinkler? Easy Peasy! I think I've seen that car before!!!

I've got TMER&L refs, as well as some Sydney, Australia pics. Should be easy, if I use currently extant parts. Such a car would be a nice distraction, and help eradicate the temptation to smach the computer when my other projects aren't cooperating :-)

About parts, I'm willing to pass on bits and pieces that I've made in TSM. If anyone wants parts from my Milwaukee 1100 or Speedrail lightweight, just let me know...

Hi,

I'm from Chula Vista, CA(San Diego area) and we are serviced by the Blue Line of the San Diego MTS System. They operate around 72 Siemans-DuWag U-2 units and fifty some Sd-100's. The Denver light-rail system also has these models. I am looking for units to both operate and to use as static scenery. The old Santa Fe Depot is unique in that it still is in use with the light rail system tracks adjacent to the Amtrak and Coaster tracks. Any help in this search would be welcome.

How about a wooden interurban caboose without the cupola or bay window. I've seen photos of them in use on the North Shore as well as the Roarin Elgin and would guess that it was a fairly common type for interurbans

Well, one among many would be Pacific Electric interurban car 1318 (car 100...the Arrowhead Springs car...from one of PE's predecessors, San Bernardino Valley Traction Company). The SBVT was a pretty obsucre company that operated primarily in San Bernardino and its neighboring cities of Highland, Redlands, and Colton in southern California. Not sure if too many people here have heard of the SBVT Co or have much background info on it, but if so..."combo" interurban car 100 would be nice! :)

I'm thinking:
Pacific Electric 300/400-series [St.Louis/Pullman] "blimps"
Pacific Electric 600/700-series [St.Louis/Brill] "Hollywood cars" (remember Roger Rabbit?)
Any Birney safety car [Brill] (although Pacific Electric #331 made an appearance in "Singing in the Rain")
Pacific Electric 1600-series [Built By P.E.] offset-hood steeplecabs
And pretty much anything from the LARy (although modelling for 3'6" gauge adds a new element of complexity).

gatecityca
07-10-2002, 05:18 AM
oh yeah, definitely a blimp would be nice...especially if someone could make the executive car PE1299. Also, if someone does get around to designing any 1600-series locomotives, PE1624 would be great. This loco STILL EXISTS at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris, CA. In fact, I think it is the last remaining Pacific Electric locomotive. Unfortunately, the last I heard it was not in running condition...it needed a few replacement resistor elements, some repair work done on one of the traction motors, and SEVERELY need a major paint job. But it's there, and hopefully they'll get it running again sometime.

I am working on an Alco-GE 50 ton steeplecab that would paint-up into a nice NS 453 there. And if I had the plans for the four-trucker freight motor, I'd start to build that in a New York heartbeat, as that is the ex- Oregon Electric 50, built in the O.E. shops in 1941, I think. Stuctures: Small powerhouse, better substation than the default one, and lots and lots of storefronts.

I would second the request for Melbourne trams, although I also run German trams and routes, and Mesaba Electric with STS Interurbans.

I think it is important that the wire height and pantograph height should match and that if a route includes trams, they should have the same height, particularly for real routes. U79 is good in that respect and also the Rheinbahn and Linie 27 routes.

My limited expertise is in editing ENG, WAG and CVF files and writing simple activites. Modelling trams or routes is beyond me, so I await developments with anticipation and patience.

Vapor means dissapating into thin air, doesn't it? Well if you've still got it on your workbench, then it hasn't vaporized. It's "On Hold" waiting for the right moment, whether it's inspiration, enlightenment, or whatever. You haven't given up on it. You're just waiting for the right time to re-start it, be it tomorrow, or next Summer. I have several of my own projects on hold. They haven't been forgotten by any means, but sometimes the drive to finish a model gets lost and gets picked up later. Heck, this is a hobby, and we do it when and if we get the time. If there are those who cannot wait for a particular model to come out, then perhaps their time should be spent learning how to work the programs needed to put out their favorite models. Matt, you're a busy guy, with one of the most stressful occupations anyone could do, and not anyone could do what you do. May you have a Merry Christmas, and thanks for teaching me how to work TSM so long ago.
