View Full Version : Couplers and tight curves, again. With solution!!

Hi,

You know, I am struggling for the coupler vs tight curves question some time. I have downloaded cars that I cannot get through the curves.

Yesterday I downloaded a couple of new Dutch tramway cars. Fine ones, btw. The creator stated that the couplers were set to go through tight Xtrack curves. So I tried and Yes!! they do. The Meseba route is a nice test route!

Here is a pic:
http://forums.flightsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3d3e602d2abd4098.jpg

I was curious and opened the .wag file and looked for the coupler settings. Here they are:

Coupling (
Type ( Automatic )
Spring (
Stiffness ( 2e7N/m 0 )
Damping ( 0.2e7N/m/s 0 )
Break ( 5.1e7N 5.1e7N )
r0 ( 0.1 1e9 )
)
CouplingHasRigidConnection (0)
)

Look at the line CouplingHasRigidConnection! There is a 0 (zero) between the brackets. Can that do the trick?
Well I have a couple of 2-axle trailers (yes now I know, they are called trailers) that I cannot get throught the curves. So I changed their couplers settings by adding that that CouplingHasRigidConnection (0) and no other changes.

And YES!!! they go through the curves. It looks somewhat odd, but who cares? I get them through curves with very less power, no bounces. Clean and smooth they run.
Here are pics with and without the bounding box visible.

You can see that the bounding boxes are touching each other, but this seems to be no problem in this case.
For me the CouplingHasRigidConnection(0) is a nice solution.

Oh and these trailers are 2-axle cars as I set before and it is always more difficult to get 2-axles through a curve then 4-axles.

Dick!,

Could it be that simple? After reading this, I went into my trainset folder and started checking....sure enough, all the cars that can negotiate the XTracks 30's have this statement, or

CouplingHasRigidConnection() - with empty brackets....

The cars that don't navigate the 30's do not have this line!

Well Spotted!

With much appreciation,

Tim

The funny thing is, I got this solution from this very Forum!

So, don't credit me for that one (but I don't mind a bit of credit for the models and the skins, which I can claim as my own ;-) )

It does my heart proud to see my little tram chugging away on a really nice route!

Hi,

Sorry faded_Glory that I didn't credit you in my post. But I must say that the Gooise is a very beautiful tram set. Many many thanks. And please accept my apologies. I was so glad that I finally get the Leipzigers through the curves, that I forgot to mention the creator.
And seen the number of posts, welcome on board, specially here on the Traction forum.
And I hope that you will upload the Gooise Tram to the File Library here. I sure know that you please a lot of people here with this fine tramway set.

Dick,

I didn't mean it that way at all, don't worry. I am all too pleased to see my little babies in action :)

I have considered uploading them here, but to be honest, I have so far never managed to download anything from this site, I can never get in.

I therefore decided to upload to 2 sites where I have downloaded from myself, http://msts.nl/ and http://www.uktrainsim.com/ - it seems fair to give back where I take from.

If you like the set, there are a couple more versions of the coach in the works, a slightly smaller one with plain panelling, in fact an example of the earliest Dutch steam tram coaches, and another one that is a bit special.... I'll show them when they are nearer completion.

Hi,

Will be nice Jur. Love to see more tram stuff. Specially Dutch stuff.
A nice freight/bagage/post car will be nice too. Such a two-axle as the Hoorn-Medemblik has. Then the tramset is complete.

Oh, I can upload the set for you, if you like that. I have a paid account, so I can get into the library every moment I wish.
I think the most reasonable solution is to package the loco and the cars into one set. Oh I will credit you of course!! :-) :-)

Hi Dick,

Thanks for the info, although when I tried to add the line, it did strange things to my trailer. Perhaps it affected the Velocity line (which came nex) as when I entered a route with the car and trailers, I released the brakes, applied one notch of power and the trams disappeared! Straight away it vanished and derailed at high speed. Check this pic out, it shows how fast it was going...

Hi Jur.

Very nice trams, I'll have to add those to my collection. I do enjoy trams with trailers.

Cheers,
Matt A

Dick,

Thanks for the offer. I tried again to get into the download library last night and early today, but without luck. I have reservations to upload my work to a site that I can't even get in to check that the upload has gone OK, let alone download anything for myself.

I think I'll stick with the two sites I mentioned in my earlier post. I may upload them to http://www.trains-station.com/ as well, that site contains a good number of Dutch models.

Matt, you can go to the sites I mentioned. UK Trainsim re-sets its download quota every day at 20.00 GMT, you should be able to download for a few hours after that. MSTS has no limitations, AFAIK. I hope you'll enjoy the set, they are very European.

Hi,

MSTS seems always again and again good for a surprise. You think, yes! now I get it and then you get an other surprise.

Weird, strange, what so ever!

Hi,

Jur that's pity. The Uk site is IMHO a horrible site to download from and lately the loco was dissapeared at msts.nl. That site doesn't seem to be very stable. And I have tried many time to get a paying member at the UK site, but they are still refusing my credit card.

Dick, just in case you missed it, the mail/luggage van is now available for download from the UK site I mentioned earlier:

I did actually manage to get into the trainsim.com download area, so maybe I should upload the Gooische Stoomtram here as well.

Hi,

Wow, that's looking very nice. Thanks for attending me. Hadn't noticed it yet. Yesterday evening, I was not at ChrisTrains forum.
But no problem, I am a premier account holder now at the UK site, so I can download when I want and what I want without any restriction.

Hi
Are there more screenshots of the steam tram?
