Well, I'm still working on the sound. I LIKE the Mesaba Electric. Especially noted the roof light...
Anyway, I haven't got the MG sound in the cab yet; will have to look at some diesel .sms files, I think the answer lies in there.
But I do have PCC track running sounds. This may be repetitious to those more experienced than I am, but since most of us are feeling our way in the dark as regards sound in MSTS, here it is:
Track sounds are related to the route one is running, and not the equipment. So what I had to do it create a route just for PCC's. So I duplicated NEC for want of anything else; quick and dirty. Named the new one PCC Testing. I have some loops made up, and they play without errors now. But the loops are too short. Right now, it's more irritating than the standard track loop we're so used to hearing in cabs now. Easy fix, though. I also need to make up more track joint loops. And since I only have a default track sms file, I used it for all the other track types: Concrete Supported, Under Bridge, etc. The funny thing is, when those locales are encountered, the sound goes quiet until it passes through, under, or over. No answer to that mystery yet. I had figured I wouldn't hear any change in the sound if I used the same file for all track types. Another small mystery to solve.
But the upshot is, if one wants PCC running sounds, cab view, or external, one needs to deal at the Route level, instead of the Trainset level.
This is a pain, but for now, what the heck. After all, I guess, in real life PCC's don't run in the NEC! But for a street railway system, if one wants to run several different equipment types (but not in the same session), one would have to have appropriate route copies made, renamed, etc.
Well, anyway, just a little progress report. While I sure was happy the first time it worked, it needs a lot of tweaking before I feel good enough about it to put up the files for download.
Also, I just wonder: how much of a hindrance would it be to have duplicate routes, with a copy customized for PCC's? Am I barking up the less desirable tree here? Since it's the only way, will people be willing to do that?
