View Full Version : looking for trolley car tracks (no ballast or ties)

Hi all,

I've been doing some more work on the Pacific Electric Arrowhead line (still have a long, long way to go) and I was hoping maybe someone might be able to help me with a major problem I've been having. The biggest problem I've been having is getting the track to look right. San Bernardino had almost entirely single track on all the local trolley lines, with much of it running right down the center of public streets. (The northern portions of the Arrowhead line did run on private right-of-way, however). I was wondering if anyone knew how I might be able to get track textures that look a bit more like streetcar tracks...no ballast or ties, so I could lay the track on city streets and it would look realistic. I'd need lengths of straight track, curved sections of 45 and 30 degrees, switches, and a 'Y'. I remember that one track which I think came with an XTracks download (which I believe is meant to be used with a wooden trestle) did look like it could work. Is there anyway I could copy the shape files of the tracks I need, but use the texture file of the bridge track? Otherwise, has anyone made streetcar tracks available in the library yet? I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Chris

Um, try looking for track texture files like trackclean.ace, then copy from that folder, to that folder in your route. Hoep you can understand that, and I hope it helps you.

Regards,

Ben

Okay, problem solved! It was a lot simpler than I thought! I just lowered the tracks so only the rails would show up above the pavement. I had to play around with it for a while and adjust the height of the roads so the rails would still show, but it came out okay.

Yeh, this works quite well, and I've been using this technique, but the problem of missing curbing and sidewalks is still there. Joseph Spinella's Laperouse tram route has his own tracksections with the street, curbing and sidewalks all one unit. Take a look at his posts for pix. it's really quite well done.

But with this first technique, I also raise the terrain polys just slightly between the streets and carbarns and other places to make the transition not too noticeable. See Picture below at my carbarn leads.

Joseph Spinella's La Perouse line is just great, and his work JUST GREAT!!!

I'll bring the one your thinking of to the top.

Now, are all those point POINTS???

Aye, Cap'n, that they are! They all work, and I gotta tell you, you got to be quick even at 5mph to open the points you want in time, but if you're too early or late on the G-key, you're down the wrong road!
These are XTracks 30degree Tram Points, btw XTracks is an excellent addon that no traction route should be without! IMHO The Best Addon for MSTS!
