Trains in MP sessions

If you have rooling stock that other players don't have in a MP session, are they still visible to all players participating? I'm kinda knew at this stuff and am reluctant to participate for fear that I will screw things up for everyone and ruin the session. Is it possible to just follow other trains? Can any player exit the MP session at any time?

Nothing you run is visible to anyone but yourself. This is NOT a true multi-player game, only a simulated situation. You have to imagine the other trains...
