The idea of traverser is that it takes less room than multiple sets of sidings and points in a yard whose size is constrained for whatever reason.
It's therefore a simple matter to transfer a unit from Road A to Road H just by running it onto the traverser at the end of A and rolling the platform across to H.
You'll also see traversers used in workshop yards and maintenance facilities where an item of rolling stock comes out of the assembly shop and needs to be transferred across and up to the road leading to the paint shop, for example.
A most useful device and one that will be an excellent addition to Trainz via the "Yardmaster" module.

The old London County Council (LCC) tramways, later London Transport, had traversers on all their depots. It's ideal for serving 20 or 30 roads in quite a restricted space.

Transfer tables were employed quite a bit throughout Europe. I belive some modern diesel shops here in the US employ them as well.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-26-01 AT 06:34AM (EST)[p]Hi Boweavel,
Below the picture of a typical London County Council (LCC) tram depot, with its traverser:
http://www.trainsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3c0228b85f0b2793.jpg
In front you see the traverser pit, where the traverser goes along to reach the different roads. There is a tram on the traverser and the man next to it, drives the traverser itself.
The whole contraption works like a bridge on wheels.
Hope this helps. (I've learned how to upload and display a picture on this forum.)
Cheers,
Henry.

Agh i c.. Thanks..
Looks like its actually more usefull than a turntable..ie: covers more tracks :-)
Thanks

That's right. All you need is one feeder track and you can have literally hundereds of tracks served by the traverser.
The only disadvantage is the time it takes to move cars over the traverser. In the morning, when lots of cars have to move out, it must take quite a time to get them on the road.
Cheers,
Henry.

Yes you did.
In fact, you said that you couldn't see the point! :)

Yeah..but what i meant was..
"I couldnt see the point in a shifting a train sidways", Not ..
"I couldnt see the point of trainz including it"..
The point about trainz including it a can see.. and could see it from the start..
I just couldnt work out why someone would want to shift a train sideways.. Now i know :-)

How about working lights for level crossings, animated gates, traffic signals, etc.?

those are some of the surprises we will just have to wait and see, but there are moving cars so i imagine there will be working level crossings in various forms, anyways in the video they all have sound so hopfully they went the extra mile and did make working crossing lights ect.
