I found a very good Japanese translator at:

http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/wwwjdic.html

It appears to translate place names correctly which Alta Vista's Babble Fish has trouble translating. For example, characters for a station name were translated by Babble Fish as "Stone hitting" and translated as "Ishiuchi" by the Jim Breen Monash University translator. I'm placing my bet on the latter translation.

There are also codes to indicate the translation is a place name and other codes that help tranlsate. Often several meanings are given by the character and you can usually surmise which is the correct one. For example:

(Japanese characters here) adj-na,adj-no,adv,n) (1) generally; ordinarily; usually; (2) train that stops at every station; (P); EP

There is also a URL tranlator that I have not tried yet.

Yes Ive used this many times before. It is generally better than Babel Fish, but sometimes dead links occur.
