Hello folks. If you have any questions or comments about RT3 I'd be happy to answer or at least listen.

Worked on RT3 and many of the scenarios.

I like it, Graphics are impressive, I haven't played since I beat all the scenarios though (I'm currently wrapped up in simcity4 and Flight-sim 2k4)

I am getting the game from "Santa" and I have read a fair amount on it and i have to agree with some of the other comments about the diesel engines that are available! They are very limited in turn to steam engine selection!!! This was also the case for RRT2, I like the SD45, and Dash-9 but they made them dogs!!! I can see the same thing happing for RRT3! I was disappointed to not see the SD-40-2, the most popular, best running diesel of all time!!! How about the GP-38? I know it is hard to include a wide variety, but come-on!
I also read another comment about the large numbers of European senerios and I have to agree that I too don't care for them and would like more north american stuff!!! I sure hope they will be included in the update mentioned.
Thanks

In my opinion, The game is great. In my opinon, the game is good as it is, and I look forward to RRT4

The only a few things I would improve. Perhaps more scenarios in the North East, Like NYC. Also, some more commuter activtires liek RRT2. Also, a feture where you can be inside the locomotive cab, and inside the passenger cars. Also, the cars be updated more often, and more modern American. Other wise, it is very good.

Steam is the lead designers favorite locomotive type and it's also where the most "romance" has been to some extent. If all goes well we'll have tools to let moders make new locos and skins. We're also making new maps and have some new locomotives to release soon.

Which activity has bigboy and challenger in it?

If you look at the "Locomotion" chart that came with the game, the dates the locomotive has been in service are stated. If you look at the Challenger, you can buy the locomotive for your railroad from any year between 1942-1983. For the Big Boy, it's available for any year between 1945-1971.

EDIT: BTW, it's a great game. As others have said, graphics are impressive, sound is good, and although this is my first full RTT game, it's fun.

Haven't tried it yet,but seems fun. I would however mostly buy it for all the musical and audioble goodies!

And as for the economy thing, I'll do as I've done in RRT2, SANDBOX MODE!!:D

Hi Franz,
imho the game is great. Maybe not perfect, but we would wait forever for perfect. I know it must be a difficult process trying to please both train sim fans and strategy game fans in the same package. It seems right now you guys are busy with the initial patches, but any word on a time line for release of the modding enhancement?

Cheers:

Looks great. I especially like the dynamic environment (day, morning, night, sun, rain, etc.)

I really like the maps and the way you can pan and zoom through them.

Also like having tunnels and spanning trestles to work with.

Jeers:

No more managers (minor)

Only one major jeer. It drives me crazy having to cope with ridiculously steep and roller coaster grades everywhere, including areas of low hills. By using a short piece of track in RT2, I could play civil engineer and build a properly graded line. I know about the Post Office/ Bulldoze routine, but that gets monotonous as well as unreasonably expensive for one grid square at a time.

I don't know if you can add some sort of in-game track/terrain leveling tool as part of a future patch, but it would ensure the survival of the game's place on my hard drive.

One more cheer though:

Thanks for taking our commments and/or abuse here, its great when a developer is interested in what their customers have to say about it.

Best Regards,

Matt

I have the game, and obviously the developer is a steam lover...which is great, but the title should reflect the "historical" theme of the game. It has nearly every steam and electric engine that ever was, but only 2 modern well-known diesel-electric locomotives...that sucks, but I agree with the graphics, great. And I agree with the fact that it has few N American scenarios. My main beef is the AI...its idiotic. Even a well profiting railroad are running steam locos in 2025, and the trains consist of 3 cars, like a grain car, a passenger car and a goods (container) car...totally unrealistic...but its makin money??
And the cities are not represented realistically, Chicago is usually pretty elaborate, but go to Ft Wayne (my hometown) and theres like 3 houses...thats it...now I know Ft Wayne is alot larger than that, and its railroad trackage and RR history is alot more important than the game shows. It would be a perfect "in between" station between Chicago and Detroit. Sure, I could design my own map, but I didnt buy the game to do that! Im stricken with insanity to design routes in MSTS, I dont want to mess around with map design in RT3 too!

Overall, the game is nice, the track layin issue about tracks that look like roller coaster routes through hills needs fixed, the layout with supply/demand screens at stations Ive yet to understand, I open station menue and I cant figure out what to hull where cause on the bottom of the screen when you put the cursor over a certain commodity, it says "12 loads availibe" at that station, then you open the station viewer and it says that station has no supply of that same commodity...Ill admit it kinda keeps me from playin much. Thats an important feature and the manual dont explain it enough for me, so I run my RR into the ground while AI runs their 3 little "mixed" trains of utterly nothing with ancient locos and make mass dollars...go figure?

Is it possible to create extra engines for the game ? Repaint the existing ones (to less imaginative liveries currently in the game) ?

Thanks for this opportunity!

I have all the RRT series and like them all. I think RRT3 is a great upgrade in most respects: a more realistic economy wherein some freight moves on it's own, the dynamic economy, the 3D graphics are GREAT and really give you a feel for living in your virtual world! Also the greater variety of cargo and complexity of the cargo is very nice.

So what don't I like? Only one thing, which has been mentioned elsewhere in this forum: the inability to keep cargo on a train until it's really needed.

RRT2 had the screen where you could offload non demanded cargos for storage and later pickup, or keep all cargos on the train, or sell only demanded cargos, and keep undemanded cargos on the train until needed later.

I realize the concept of "demanded" and "undemanded" cargos doesn't apply in RRT3 since there's often SOME demand for almost every cargo, due to the more dynamic economy. That's ok. And perhaps the designers dont' want to add yet another interface option. So here's a suggestion I have:
When users are manually creating consists rather than using the auto consist manager, then for any specific cars in the consist (i.e. cars which aren't listed as "any freight", "any express" or "any"), the freight should stay with those cars until the train reaches a point where the consist is changed by the player.

This would help in collecting goods from a number of outlying industries and hauling them to a place where they can be used. While I realize a lot of compromises have to be made in a game like this and this isn't an attempt to reproduce prototype railroading, I think this simple fix would help a lot. It WOULD be more reflective of real railroading in the "broad sense" that I believe the game is attempting to target: the railroad would build to farmlands, coal fields, iron mines, etc., which are often due to terrain etc. clustered in a certain region, would collect the raw materials from perhaps a number of far-flung depots, and haul them in to a factory.

For instance in the Australian scenario you could build a number of stations in areas near to where wool is produced, send a single 6 car train to pick up a couple cars from each (and NOT drop off wool at a sheep farm on the way!), then run that train some distance over the mainline to a textile mill. Finally delivering the clothing to a town, and repeating the run.

I think this would be a simple tweak? Though I'd LOVE to see the full 3 choices come back, probably only for custom consists. Instead of "demanded" we could assume that cargos would be kept on board until they reached the stop on the route that would bring the HIGHEST PRICE for that particular cargo, provided the cars weren't changed out such that the cargo could no longer be carried on the train.

Thanks for the opportunity to respond! I do like the game and play it a lot!

Thanks,

Steve Davis

Well, I got it for Christmas and I played it until about mid-Feb. Thats it! Couldn't get into it, I think the economy is too dynamic. The amount of post in this entire section of TS should indicate how bad the game is and the lack of interest. Lets see how long it takes before there is another reply!

I downloaded the demo, but decided to stick with RT2, which I still play on occasion...

I have problems with the graphics.

During the game when the AI'S are busy and there is town growth the game slows down and the mouse becomes harder to move around the game because the game is stopping and pausing. If i am viewing a train it will also stopping and pausing. At the start of the game i have no problems.
Any ideas if i can solve this problem.

I have a pentium 4 300GHZ
1 gig of ram
ATI radeon 9800 xt
Windows Xp
Memory is set at 1536mb.

LOL - wozzar, it has been so long since I played it I can't remember if experienced any of the same probs you have. I don't think I did, and it sounds like you have a kick-ass computer. I would try the basics first, latest drivers and what-not. I know with mine any back ground apps that are running including being connected to the internet seem to cause stuttering. I haven't been to their website in a while either but maybe RRT3 has some info or an update on this for you. Other than that, what do you think of the game?

Hi, sorry if im hijacking this thread but i need help and you seem like the guy who might be able to give, this is a thread i posted earlier to which i have had no help from.....hope you can sort it out.

Hi all, been a fan of RR since the original on amiga, I'm a noob here on these forums, hope you guys can help me.

After getting Railroads!, and not liking it very much, thought i would re-insstall RR3 and play for a bit.

The install went fine, tried a sandbox game, New Beginings 1900, game starts to load, when the text at the bottom says loading databases, i get an error with a CTD. heres the debug error report i get.

Car Type 'Class460L' is missing the length points (i.e. 'Class460L_LengthPoint.3dp')
Pack element < CarSideView_3.imb > not found

I have never had a problem with this game b4, i tried re-installing twice now to no avail, there are no marks or scratches on the discs and it installs fine.

Any help you guys could give me would be very much appreciated, thanks.

Neilo.
