This is my hobby outside of trains and other things. Exploring places where you're not supposed to be. Probably seems boring to most people, but I find it simply exhilerating. Hope you enjoyed it! :-)

Are there any database of abandoned buildings? I would like to find some in my town.

You can try at the forums I use:

www.uer.ca

Register then use the Location Database to find your city. Most of it is Canadian content but there are many US members and locations.

I have never ran into any bums/druggies/etc. while UEing but I don't think I would be scared or anything. My friend carries a small blade with him, I carry a Swissy. I doubt we'd have to use it though, if you make them sure that you're just there to look around, you're not taking anything or whatnot, they will be friendly.

Druggies I don't know about. Its probably just best NOT to approach them at all.

This brings back so many memories. When I was a teenager we use to go to an abandon mental institution (Pilgrim State Hospital) that was about 18 stories high and full of weird and interesting sites i.e. operating rooms, special wards, patient rooms, cafeterias and a bomb shelter in the basement that had rations for months supply. The mecca of this building was the roof. The view was for miles.

In the 80’s they imploded the building. There were a lot of people hanging out in there and they were stealing the copper piping. It was just amazing to be in there and picture this once huge mental institution in full operation.

Enjoy the sights, but be cool with this stuff, there is a lot of danger in this and it is against the law.

Cheers
Larry

Here is the link to some of the pictures of the hospital. We use to follow the rail line into the hospital area and the first picture with the steam engine has the main hospital in the background...that is the building we use to explore.

Yup,abandoned mental hospitals are freaky places.Overbrook was an old school place, sort of like Willowbrook in Staten Island.I think Josef Mengele would have been right at home in these horrible places. It was amazing the amount of stuff that was still there.Patient records detailed some scary stuff.I've experienced some unexplainable things there also. And I'm not one to believe in the supernatural.Voices, crying, and horrific screams were often heard by myself and friends. And almost always in the same areas.Wish I had some pics.

Here is a site with some better pictures of the Pilgrim State Hospital. There are still alot of buildings left to explore.
