I would like to know how long the routes can be in this sim? 100 mi
200 mi, 300 mi. I'm sure xtracks probably won't work. I notice the featured routes are not that long, and i for one like long routes.
Thank goodness for xtracks! Hope we don't have to have something like that for KRS.

Until-now-announced routes have all of them less than 100 miles in lenght, which is less than in MSTS. However, routes will be much much more detailed. Currently it is not know, if there will be some north american route. I can presume, that it would be somehow longer.

Still, I think, that you will be able to build route with any lenght, much easier than in MSTS.

If I have read the KUJU announcements, then routes can be much longer than what we can run with MSTS since MSTS retains a lot of data in memory rather than releasing it. Apparently, the new sim will be able to release memory and apply it as needed as one progresses along a route. Who knows, if someone does the Needles Sub, one might take a train all the way from California to Texas all on one route.

Being a route builder I'd say the length of ~100 miles has more to do with how much work there is to do building a route as well as how much information do you have on hand than it does about any limitation in the sim.

Wouldn't it be nice to run all the way from California to Texas!

But who would possibly want to sit a solid eight hours behind his computer and watch the rail disappearing underneath his "loco"???

I would not have to, my SANTA-FE-HST being capable of up to 2000 mph ! :7

I think most guys running long routes save the activity and carry on later, which is better than long routes split up into different parts, not connecting to each other. Also easier to plan, create and to modify if users want to !

It's like the MARIAS PASS and the WHITEFISH versions, the MARIAS-KOOTENAI being better, combining the two. SNIPER did similar with the PON-10 ! ;-)

MP3K is my favorite Otto! I imagine going 2000 mph, you don't get to see the scenery very good.

You do if you use my #5 Passenger view's 40 metres high 360° camera ! ;-)

I use it mainly to check out long routes for errors, like the Conrail-Indy, I moved to get rid of it's White Void and also to test players paths in activities, like the three times around the WUPPER-10 path, using the reverse loops I added.

Take care, O t t o.

You done a great job on the conrail indy. I can't thank you enough!
Theirs a tutorial on reverse loops at the steam for me web site and by placing two reverse points you can get AI trains to go around you.
Be nice to see that in the new sim also only not having to use reverse points.

Definately revamping, or relooking at the whole path process would be a definate bonus! I think MSTS spent alot less time to throw it together at the end where they spent more time on the look and feel (I know some physics guru's may disagree with that). But many add ons have been able to deal with the faulty physics, etc. where unfortunately the way the AE assembles paths, is simply all that we got. I've tried dealing with the path codes, and simply gave up as despite a few minor improvements, I don't think I would get much further if I tried.

As for the length of routes, I too believe in long routes and or the ability to network on to other routes. For instance if someone was to model 1 subdivision, and another modeled another some type of connection mechanism would allow you to drive from 1 to the other. Take an action event in MSTS for instance. MLT modeled the Dundas Sub & Oakville Subs. At Hamilton The Oakville Sub would connect to the Grimsby Sub (unmodeled) that passes my neck of the woods. If an action event triggers a transfer from MLT Niagara Corridor lets say, to another route I had planned called Niagara the transfer would take place simply by unloading the previous route, loading the new route, and transfering the train, and any specifics like traffic to it. Even if the transfer takes place miles apart too it would be neat to at least be part of a train from one side of the continent to the other. Imagine even if you weren't running the train to be in the passenger view, while you entertained friends or watched TV etc.

Something similar already is out there with Freight Yard Manager (www.freightyardmanager.com). This of course isn't the full 3d we come to expect, but the connections between the end of one map to the begining of another are instintanious. In a yard that I'm the yardmaster as Sterling Heights, MI there are about 6 daily inbounds, 6 daily outbounds, and the yard locals. When you mention time issues it simply takes me about a month to go through switching a full days cycle of trains, and I have to save and contine when I come back. Since I'm the only yardmaster, nobody takes over, no AI, and the yard is the same the way I left it when I return.

As I've posted previously I hope that Kuju (or whatever next 3d simulator) will be open ended enough to possibly integrate with FYM. When you log onto the FYM server the busier territories you occupy, the more that is waiting for you. Imagine logging onto a server and trains are waiting for new crews to run over your favorite route. Hopefuly this will be reality some day, but until then I can only dream.

Thanks

Sean

You know Otto, that is not entirely what I would call prototypical railroading. ;)

Yes, I know, Sebastian, but it's FUN, especially when you miss an end-of-the line buffer and are halfway to the moon before MSTS complains about that ! :7
