On Saturday, we took our daughter down to Augusta's Riverwalk. A playground is located next to the river and thankfully, it is also located next to the NS's crossing of the Savannah River. This line is the same line that the Graniteville crash occured on last year and sees only a handful of trains per day. After crossing into Georgia from South Carolina, trains begin a stretch of street running along 6th street. On the other end of 6th street, the CSX line swings in from Atlanta and after a short time, the lines split off and into NS's and CSX's yards.

After about a half hour watching my daughter play, I heard a horn being blown at a private crossing a few miles away. Sometimes crews don't blow for the crossing, but not the case today. A few minutes later headlights appeared on the other side of the river and a patched Conrail slowly creeps across the river. As soon as it crosses the bridge, it begins street running.

Yes, it is the old Southern main line. Not much traffic, but between the trestle and the street running, a neat spot to railfan if you get lucky.
