Saturday night I went out to the Maschen yard, here are a few of the
pictures I took:

When I got there at around 10:30pm, the sun was already gone,
but the clouds still had a nice red tone:

The locomotive pool, 2 seconds exposure:

[img src="http://users.informatik.haw-hamburg.de/~birnba_i/zusi/mrbf02.jpg"]

Most of the engines were just parked for the night, not many trains
are being processed on Saturday nights...

[img src="http://users.informatik.haw-hamburg.de/~birnba_i/zusi/mrbf03.jpg"]

[img src="http://users.informatik.haw-hamburg.de/~birnba_i/zusi/mrbf05.jpg"]

The composition group for southbound trains (one of the yard's two
humps is located at the far end of this group):

[img src="http://users.informatik.haw-hamburg.de/~birnba_i/zusi/mrbf06.jpg"]

Long lines of cars in front of the workshop:
[img src="http://users.informatik.haw-hamburg.de/~birnba_i/zusi/mrbf07.jpg"]

The entry group for northbound trains, this is the area where the
"unsorted" trains arrive:
[img src="http://users.informatik.haw-hamburg.de/~birnba_i/zusi/mrbf10.jpg"]

11:20pm and all is quiet...
[img src="http://users.informatik.haw-hamburg.de/~birnba_i/zusi/mrbf11.jpg"]

Once again the composition group for southbound trains:
[img src="http://users.informatik.haw-hamburg.de/~birnba_i/zusi/mrbf13.jpg"]

Overlooking the tracks used for queueing cars in front of the work-
shop and the washing facility, the large building in the background
is Msof, one of the four switchboxes that are still in service (two
smaller switchboxes are no longer needed anymore). Msof stands for
"Maschen Südgruppe Ostseite Fahrdienstleiter", "Maschen southern
system, eastern side dispatcher". The yard is divided into the
northbound and the southbound system as well as an eastern and a
western part. Therefore, the switchboxes are named after their
location: Mswf and Msof for the southbound system, Mnwf and Mnof for
the northbound system. The M stands for Maschen, the f at the end
indicates that there is always a dispatcher on duty on that switch-
box.

Turning a little to the left at the location where the previous photo
was taken, you see this:

The composition group for northbound trains with it's hump in the
foreground:

And here's a panorama (as a link, both the forum software and the
mods probably wouldn't like it if I inserted a photo 3900 pixels wide)

users.informatik.haw-hamburg.de/~birnba_i/zusi/mrbf_nacht.jpg
(I left out the http://, otherwise the forum software insisted on
showing the picture, I don't know how to just link it)

I noticed that finding the right settings for the photos wasn't always
easy, as the camera's display tends to show the pictures brighter than
they actually are, so that they appear darker on the PC. But still,
I think the overall result was ok.

And as a bonus, here are three more pictures, taken Saturday after-
noon. At the time the yard was built between 1971 and 1977, the
entire area it was built on was cleared of all vegetation. But during
the past 29 years of operation, several large open spaces, especially
in the area located between the mainline which runs along the eastern
side of the yard and the south-eastern entry to the yard have over-
grown with small forests. I went there Saturday afternoon and walked
along the paths the cars of the service crews have left behind during
the years. And it's interesting what can be found in the middle of
tall trees:

... a milestone, ...
[img src="http://users.informatik.haw-hamburg.de/~birnba_i/zusi/wald1.jpg"]

... some sleepers ...
[img src="http://users.informatik.haw-hamburg.de/~birnba_i/zusi/wald2.jpg"]

... and an old PZB transmitter next to an overgrown cable tunnel.
So there must have been a track here once, before the yard was built...

PS: if you have taken a closer look at the skies on the night shots,
you might have wondered if we have blue or red or green stars over
here: no, we don't, but my camera has a few broken pixels.

Beautiful shots!

One question. The first shot was taken at 10:30? Is that due to your location in the world, or is that just with a slow shutter speed?

Here in the states, the longest day of the year, it's dark by 9:20.

Yesterday evening, the sun went down around 9:30 pm.
We haven't had a single cloudy day in more than 4 weeks now,
therefore it wasn't really dark for another hour after sundown.
On the longest day of the year, which was about a month ago,
sundown was after 10 pm, and around midnight, it still wasn't
completely dark outside.
