LOL, 3043 doesn't go anywhere, she's become one of my favorites. And besides, didn't she make a trip down to that part of the world not to long ago?
James.

Mike,
It's a great spot to railfan, all the trains coming from the Belleville sub, Chalk River Sub, and Winchester sub stop there to get new crews. Essentially anything in and out of Montreal. So far it's been a pretty busy summer down there, and I'm sure it'll only pick up with the fall coming.
Anyway let us know when and if you're there and I'll see if I can make it down. If not there are plenty of other nice people down there as well.
James.

The colder the prime mover is the heavier they smoke when you light 'em up. Those 16 cylinder SD9's would really cloud up the sky on a cold morning.

I should add a little more to the story. 6019 and it's consist had pulled into the yard about 2 hrs earlier and had idled for quite some time before finally being shut off. When the new crew came along and did their "vehicle" inspection, they started each engine in turn and each one smoked quite a bit, this was just the best photo out of the 3 locomotives.
I've worked around diesel engines most of my life (on the farm, in the military, and just from watching trains) and my expirience has also been there are a couple of occasions that will cause any diesel to smoke that way. Starting a diesel on a cold day does this because the first couple of "compressions" don't ignite all the fuel. Rapidly reving the engine so extra fuel doesn't get burned properly, and re-starting a diesel engine after it's been idling for a while also does it. Remeber diesel is a heavier fuel than gas, so it contains more oil and this is what causes the smoke. All three of the above mentioned conditions cause a diesel not to burn the fuel as efficiently, and the extra oil causes the smoke.
While it makes for an interesting picture, I also say that nothing beats the smell of a diesel engine in conditions like these. I know it's probably an aquired taste (smell) but it really lets you know the hard work is about to start.
James.
P.S. Almost forgot about a really interesting smell to get your senses going and that the smell created when clouds of cordite smoke and diesel smoke mix.

Yeah, she was in Galt a couple of months ago. I saw her go through Woodstock and alerted the railfan grapevine but I never got to shoot her myself.

I for one would be much happier without back problems after 12 hours sitting over a desktop control stand....GE and EMD should be shot for the patents.....I'll take a forty-Dash 2 over an Ac44 any day....
