Reading 2100 this Saturday and Sunday made her first runs actually carrying passengers. These pics highlight the Saturday run. The 2100 is doing round trip excursions from Tacoma Wa to a town about 11 miles south called Fredrickson. Video links are below the pics.

At the bottom of the Tacoma Hill. Horrible lighting.

But not when it has ditch lights! WTF were they thinking? Ditch lights on a steamer? I think not.

Cool! But, like he said, the ditchlights seem WAY out of place. But, i can get around those I guess, one thing i cant get around, is the light right above the 2100... That just looks stupid, how about they use the REAL light heh?

Listen to that whistle... sounds just like that sickly Hancock 3 chime WMSR 734 had about a decade ago.

Cool stuff Brock.-Jeffrey

Accoring to FRA rules, if you don't have ditch lights, your restricted to 20mph and must stop at all grade crossings. Older engines could be grandfathered in up to a few years ago. Any engines getting refits or major servicing would be required to add the extra lighting. The price of running trains in the US now days. If an older engine still has it's original style oscillating lights, it can retain those in leau or ditchlights.

Also any engine pulling a train must have a functioning speedometer that is correct within 3mph of posted speed. The speedo's accuracy must be verified on every run and if it is off, the unit must be replaced by another one in the consist or at the next terminal. Some older steam engines like the Pere Marquet did not have a speedo and would require a unit ahead of it. They have since added a speedo to this engine in a descrete location to make it legal.....IIRC.

Dont know about the vilidity of those rules Bill. How exactly does the 4449, SP&S 700, and other locmotives get around just fine without having to stop at every crrossing and stay below 20mph? I believe there is a certain year that any locmotives built before that date dont require ditchlights. Also, on the speedo matter, i have heard of plenty of time crews going too there crew change point before the loco was replaced, thats one of the reasons the time chart usually in the back of timetables is put there.
