thanks jay and Dave, If I didnt have such a low tech camera I would have, but since I only have a Kodak EasyShare CX7330, it was now or never, with the slow shutter speed, and the rate that the train was moving, all I would have had was from the conductor side numbers, back. I do appreciate the advice, keep it coming!

I shoot with a Kodak Z740 and normally fire when the train is about to exit the frame. Kodak has a wide lens and even if it has filled the screen i still have a few feet infront of the power.

its all in practice. You gotta learn how the shutter reacts after you fire. I practiced along the side of the road, as cars doing 45 + came past... its a good way to get your timeing down to a key, but not the safest way to do things. Whats the track speed at this place? It looks to have a unprotected crossing which I'd think would need to be flagged.

Just play around and you'll get it!

Jay

Track speed is 55 mph, with a 35 mile per hour permanent speed restriction, about a mile and a half east of this location, so if its a long eastbound, somewhere between 35 and 55, if its a short eastbound, they are doing all of 55. Westbounds are coming out of the 35 mph zone, and are usually doing 45-50 when they get to me. Here is one of my first shots with my camera, with a car, on the crossing.

There are gates there. The line that I am on, is the former Baltimore and Ohio, Chicago Mainline. I have taken about 400 shots with the camera I use, and every once and a while I still mess shots up.

Ah ok. Thanks for the info! The gates are pushed back much farther than what our are here in a VA.

Not every shot you get is going to be perfact. normally i'll shoot from 100 to 200 frames and save about 70 of them. I've got the shutter speed set on mine as high as it will go considering I go to airshows and shoot pics of aircraft doing 300 + mph. You shots now are great shots. Over time you will get better and better. Just have fun :)
