Slip rail joints on the switchbacks. Haven't seen that since Westside! Any hill that is stiff enough to cause the rail to move downhill as you battle upward indeed has the right to call itself a HILL! :)

out of the track but never quite made it.

I rode back down on the last car next to the brakeman and I asked him what they were and like Herb Kelsey, he called them " slip rail joints ".

The brakeman also said that their purpose was to allow for the expansion of the rail due to " sun heat ". He claimed that the joints were not always there and it resulted in bent rails but now the rail just slides past the other and then back when it contracts. He said that a lot of people ask if it is a re-railer system but that is not the case.
