Was this the 20th Century Limited?
That is what it said on the rear of the end car that pulled into the Altoona station today around 5:30 heading West.
Nice looking end car.

I wonder why they were using it because it looks out of place with those silver cars in front of it.

Hi Rich,
I'd have to think this was post Penn Central startup. The 20th Century Limited ended with the start of the PC in 1968 if i remember correctly, at that time passenger cars, like all other PRR/NYC/NH rolling stock was pooled and showed up wherever it was required, hence NYC Hickory Creek deep in the heart of once enemy territory.

I take it, that building is the post office or sorts?
It's pretty big.
And sweet catch, looks cool. :)

Hickory Creek is privately owned. It was originally built for the New York Central for service on the 20th Century Limited, hence the tail marker you saw. It is one of many privately owned passenger cars in the United States and Canada, and is part of the American Association of Private RailCar Owners group that is available for charter.
For further information, you can try to find either current or back issues of Private Varnish. About once a year, they list all cars in the fleet.

Not to be nitpicky, but the 20th Century Limited was discontinued in December 1967, just before the PC merger. :-)
Also, this is a current photo. As mentioned before, the car is still in service under a private owner.
