Hi All,

I'm new to the forums and I don't know if this has been asked before. If it has been asked before then my apologies. From some of the replies I have seen when a newbie ask redundat questions I ask that you not try to snap my head off please.

I saw a Military train a couple of months back when I went through Vickburg, MS that was heading east toward Monroe, LA. I thought it would be nice to be able to build a modern day miltary train. I have seen a few military items in the library and enjoy those quite a bit. Only I can't seem to find any flat cars with modern day miltary equipment (ie..modern tanks, rocket carriers, and various other modern day military trucks). I don't have the expertise or software to create models like this so if someone could tell me were I could find them I would apreciate it. Thanks:)

Dave,

There is one piece fitting what you describe in the FL already. Search under TTX. Once you search, this should be one of your 5 results:

Hope this helps

Thanks Thomas.:) I already have this one and I enjoy it very much. More than anything I'm looking for some modern tanks and military transport trucks on flats.

I would like to see some M-48 tanks to do some activities using F-7's over ATSF tracks. i took some screen shots from the Pentrex Dvd ATSF across Arizona where several military cars were at the back of a pig train. There were only water carriers and APC's on the train. Any one wanting the shots I will be glad to send them when I get back home in a couple of days.

I have not tried it, but it should be possible to take a military model that has been exported as a .s and add it to a flatcar using FreightAnim in the wag file.

I noticed that BNSF's new railfan security program specifically includes in their guidelines: "Do not take photographs of military trains and equipment". OK, since I think their program is good idea and good for railfan relations, I'll go along with that, but it seems a bit pointless. I guess there could be some super-secret weapons riding uncovered on open load flat-cars.

Ron,

I have no idea why BNSF would have instructions prohibiting photos of military trains. If it were trully classified, the military would require running it at night with day layovers in yards, and/or any classified item would be covered and there would be a railroad or military guard somewhere in the vicinity to make sure it stayed covered. This instruction appears to be from post 9-11 when a lot of ove zealous and rediculous statements appeared, but since any railfan or other person can take a photo from a position off of railroad right of way, this instruction is absurd and unrealistic.

The greatest danger would be from someone writing down facts about such a train--time, direction, types of equipment. Of course, a photo could do that in a second with the exception of such information as location and direction--writing would take a minute more, but have all the details. Besides that, anyone who really wants photos for intell purposes will take them at a location where they will not be observed--not at a railfan location.

Besides, the Pentrex film is from the 1990's--hardly much intell value for anyone.

Having worked in the intell world for 13 years and retired from the Navy, I can tell you that taking a photo of a train with exposed military equipment is not any more a threat than someone with a pencil and a piece of paper.

It would be nice to have more military equipment on flatbeds, such as the M1 abrams, M2/M3 bradleys, the Patriot, MLRS missle systems, M109 or M198 howitzers. That would be helpful for my route because I was going to include the local military base in my area.

Hummmmm. Here's a start.

Looks like one would have to make the 6 axle flats as well as the M1.

Perhaps BNSF saying to not take pictures of Military could be the whole 'Warning' part. I could forsee something a little more special being shipped, something with an escort, and the escort willing to hassle people taking pictures of it.

Perhaps when a new type of tank is being shipped, the military may not see fit to tarp everything, but they wouldn't want some people, who may not be loyal, to take a lot of pictures of it, and get a jump on analyzing it for weaknesses.

And we all know how 'Concerned Citizens' can be, if there's a trainload of rockets stopped on a siding, and someone with too much time on their hands calls you in for snapping a few pics of it.

BNSF saying to not take pics of these items is probably at the military's prompting, and so if the military were to decide to hassle someone for taking pictures, then, well, BNSF warned them not too.

I'm not trying to bring up any issues about right to photograph and right to be not hassled, this is just the way it looks to me.

James,
If there is military hardware riding exposed on a train then it has already been photographed and published in Janes' All the World's Fighting Vehicle annual publication. If the military wants it kept from being seen and photographed it will be kept that way.

OUTSTANDING !

I guess they fixed the track shedding problem, no retainning ring on the sprockets anymore. If you thing getting a flat tire is bad try throwing a track in the middle of a muddy field in winter !

The cars look great, but not worth the effort to try and find them and download them at nerr.com.

Each of these photos have potential to help with creating military related rolling stock.

I sure hope that whoever uploaded those DODX flat cars to NERR will consider uploading them to train-sim.com. Does anyone have the email address for the person who built them? By the way, that DODX stands for Department of Defense and is germaine to everything they own not just the flat cars.

They weren't shredding the tracks, they were throwing them off. I was at Ft Knox when the first ones arrived for testing. Did not help matters any that the tester were issued speeding tickets on more than one occasion. 60Mph in a 45
