View Full Version : Shape File Question

I'm having an issue with a new scenery object I'm working on. I'm making a prickly pear cactus, and used the default JP2bush1.s and JP2bush1.sd shapes. The final product is fine, except that when I place it anywhere except on a flat area, the object buries itself in the terrain nearly all the way. Placed on the flat, it sits on top as it should. The buried object can be raised, of course, but I'd like it to sit on top as it should.
I'm using Micheal Sinclair's tutorial to guide me, and after making several other plants, this one is the first with this problem.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
MC

Correction; I am not using the default shapes here, but others from another desert plant. After some more testing, I find that the height in the placement is somewhat random. The attached screenshot from the RE shows several cactus placed near each other, and only 2 are sitting correctly on the surface; others are at various heighths (or depths).
I hope someone can shed some light on this.

Hi MC,
I looked at this earlier, but I don’t know the correct answer.
My first guess was that there is probably something in the .S file that dictates positioning.
I had noticed along time ago that the default tress always manage to land right square on the terrain. Wherever they were.
Wanted to…, but sorry I couldn’t help.
Have a fine evening,
Bob
It would appear that the world axis for the object's base is set below 0 (zero). Using Shape File Manager (or the original 3D file), you could shift the object up until the bottom rested at ground level.
Cheers!

Hmm... the only thing I changed in the shape file is the .ace file name, and then resized it with SFM. The original plant that uses this shape always lands in the right spot, so to speak, when placed, but not so with this version.
Which line dictates the axis of the object's base, so I can compare it with others when looking for the correct value?
Thanks,
Jeff
