Hey Tim,
Let me see if I can help you out with the Ref File Update.
When you add an object to a route, you copy/paste the s and sd files to the Shapes folder and the ace file to the Textures folder of the route, which you seem to understand.
In the package you downloaded for the object you want to add, you should also find a txt file. In that text file you should find something that looks like this. Of course yours will have different data.

Highlight all the text as seen in the shot above with the red box around it, including the closing ")" (parenthesis). Right click and select Copy.
Now, in the routes main folder you will find a file called 'your_route.ref' (your route being the name of the route you adding to. In your case it would be CajonPass).

Open this .ref file with WordPad, scroll down to the very bottom of the ref file, and paste it at the bottom of the ref file for the CajonPass.
Then, at the top of the ref file click on the Save button.

You've just Updated the Ref File. Now the object should show up in the Selection List in the Route Editor.
One thing to pay attention to in the ref entry is the 'Class' entry. This is where you'll find the new object in the Selection List.
I hope this helps you. Let us know if you need any more help. :-)
