A "track node" is where multiple MSTS track-database paths converge or cross. MSTS has difficulties with track nodes being spread too far apart. (Search Cutbank on here for more information.) Edit: A track node appears as a black dot on the Activity Editor track maps.
Using a turnout puts in a node, so the solution some employ is to insert turnouts in long stretches between nodes to keep MSTS's physics under control. That is likely what that is. The original turnout track shape would have been manually edited out of the world file and a simple tangent track piece put in its place. It doesn't need "Fixed" as it's there for a reason.
The X-Tracks track set even has Non-turnout Turnouts that address this problem. You can insert a turnout where both closed and open states take you to the same place so you can't accidentally drive off the track. Yet another solution is to place a diamond crossing piece (and world-tile-edit in a simple tangent track object).
Hope that helps...
