View Full Version : .000 File in a span archive

Problem is the .000 files are associated with Winzip and the icon appears, and the other files in the archives are normal. How can I dissassociate this file to look like the others as unknowns to make a valid archive. Went into the registry, Winzip and other areas to try it. There is the RMD 4th Division and the Kingsport routes that have this extension and I can't install them because of this problem.

Hi Kenny,

.000 is a temporary file extension used during the creation of the spanned .zip file only. If you end up seeing file extensions like .000, .001 etc. you must've either:

- aborted the creation of the spanned file too early, or

- installed a known error with a specific Windows XP version/update that was luckily corrected by Microsoft within a few days; the patch taking care of it should have installed itself on your machine via the automatic Windows update a long while ago.

As a fix you can try to manually rename the files as following:

whatever.000 -> whatever.z01
whatever.001 -> whatever.z02
whatever.002 -> whatever.z03
etc.
whatever.zip must keep its name.

Hope that helps.

Kenny,

When you download the Kingsport route to an empty folder it will look like this;

What you need to do is change the file names, so they look like this.
Take care to observe upper & lower case as this is important.

This is what you should have for the RMD-4 Route.

Again, observe the upper & lower case & spaces if any.

I use the WinRAR utility to decompress spanned Zip files. It has always worked without any problems.

For some reason it is associating this 000 file with Winzip with the icon. I renamed it and it still is considered a 000 file. The rest are just fine.

Well, maybe not. :) You have at least three problems to solve. First, in Win Explorer, click on Tools/Folder Options/View. Make sure that "Hide extensions for known file types" is not ticked.

After applying that change, the "mlwrmd42" icon at the upper left of your list will now properly show as ""mlwrmd42.zip".

Then look at your "mlwrmd.z01" or the apparent "000" file. Remove any previously hidden extension and make sure it's named "mlwrmd42.z01".

Then there's the ""mlwrmd42.002,01" file, which is obviously misnamed. If it was originally a "002" file it should be named ""mlwrmd42.z03", but you already have a "z03". I notice that you do not have a "z07" file as in Mike's screen shot.

Since I believe you couldn't previously see hidden file extensions, I think you lost track and may have start over with the renaming...

regards,
charlie

Thank you for that. I misnamed it on purpose because it wouldn't let me place the same name in the folder. I'll go look in that Explorer and see if it works.

It worked. Thank you for the help. I definitely appreciate it.
